PROPULSION SYSTEMS & PARTS

Aircraft Engines Propellers and Parts

Propulsion systems are a set of components and integrated technologies designed to generate thrust and move an object such as a car, aircraft, spacecraft, ship or others. In aircraft applications these propulsion systems include a power generating source such as an internal combustion engine, a jet engine or turboprop engine as well as an engine driving propeller or propelling nozzle depending on the application. This category includes at present Certified (aka Certificated) and Non-Certified (aka Non-Certificated) (*) aviation fuel reciprocating (piston) or rotary, gas turbine and jet aircraft engines, propellers, parts & accessories from reputable European, US and other manufacturers, structured in sub-categories based on different manufacturers. Propulsion systems and related parts for use in automotive, marine or industrial applications will also be added over time.

Commonly used certified engines in General Aviation are piston engines of TEXTRON LYCOMING and CONTINENTAL AEROSPACE TECHNOLOGIES (formerly CONTINENTAL MOTORS) but also certain models of BPR ROTAX.

Non-certified engines and propellers are those used in amateur-built / experimental airplanes or rotorcraft, ultra lights, light sport aircraft (LSA) gliders used for recreational flights (non-commercial operations). A wide selection of non-certified  piston engines (also commonly referred to as reciprocating engines) are offered including pre-assembled engines, Test Run and Ready to Fly, as well as engine kits for local assembly by the buyer as per manufacturer’s instructions. Produced by US, European and other manufacturers, together with an extensive range of related parts and accessories, they intend to cover diverse application needs of their prospective users. They come either as engines initially designed for aviation uses or automobile (car) converted engines in different power outputs, number of cylinders, cylinder configurations, features and specifications (direct drive or with gearboxes, different fuel delivery and cooling systems, and so on). Offered by well known manufacturers of certificated engines such as TEXTRON LYCOMING and CONTINENTAL AEROSPACE TECHNOLOGIES) but also by BPR ROTAX and other engine builders (MWFLY, JABIRU, Sonex Aircraft AEROCONVERSIONS, HUMMEL ENGINES, GREAT PLAINS AVIATION SUPPLY, VIKING, AEROMOMENTUM to name a few). More information is available in our Aviation Piston Engines  & Parts section.

(*) The terms "Certified" and "Certificated" are used interchangeably with the same meaning. Certified engines are those included in the '' Type Certificate'' of an aircraft model ensuring that both the aircraft and all its component parts (including propellers, engines, etc.) is compliant with all applicable airworthiness requirements and safety standards. Certificated aviation engines are sourced from specific manufacturers holding respective approvals from their respective Civil Aviation Authorities (CAA) and respective authorities in other countries based on bilateral signed agreements.

Aircraft Engine Oil...

An oil pressure sensor is a device used to measure the oil pressure on an engine. The term oil pressure sensor is often used to denote  at least two different and distinct types of sensor - an oil pressure switch and and oil pressure sender.

An oil pressure switch is an egine protection device. It is a mechanical device that has a switch inside. The oil pressure switch may be 1, 2, or 3 insulated terminals (pins). Traditionally most oil switches for protection close when they activate, to show low oil pressure.

An oil pressure sender is a device that senses the oil pressure of an engine and transmits it to the engine or machine controller. It is used as a generator protection device, to display the oil pressure to a user or for logging and diagnostic purposes. Unlike an oil pressure switch, it can display a range of readings.

Oil pressure sensors are used aircrafts and offered either as parts from the respective OEMs or as replacement parts from third parties. They are alternatively termed as HOBBS switches.

Please refer to the manufacturer Illustrated Part Cataloge (IPC) or the technical specifications of offered sensiors to select the right sensor for your application.

ANDAIR FS2020/FS2520 Series...

The Andair standard fuel selector valve range incorporates 1/4"(FS16), 3/8"(FS20) and the 1/2"(FS25) valves. These valves allow for multiple tank switching of one fuel line.

Manufactured to the highest standards, all Andair fuel selector valves are designed for safety, provide a precise and smooth feel in operation and can be supplied with custom engraving. They feature  a large red lever with 'Fuel' engraved on it and a clearly labelled fascia plate to indicate which tank has been selected. It allows for a good solid detent at each tank position and also the button on top of the lever must be raised to switch the fuel off. All these features help prevent the pilot switching the wrong tank or turning the fuel off.

Andair duplex fuel selector valves have two separate compartments so that two independent fuel lines can be switched simultaneously making them ideal for fuel injected or diesel engines where there needs to be a return line. It allows to pipe surplus fuel to the same tank from which it was drawn. This avoids overfilling the return tank or having an overly complicated fuel system.

FS2020(*) fuel selector valves feature two 3/8" sections for feed & return. FS2520(*) fuel selector valves feature one 1/2" feed section and one 3/8" return section. Both can be supplied with different ANDAIR fittings to meet application requirements.

Engines that can benefit from these valves are Surburu, Continental, Rotax, and Diesel aircraft engines.

For additional information please refer to the product presentations, the supplied documentation or contact us.

(*) Fittings in product titles relate to inlet from right tank, outlet to engine and inlet from left tank in the lower and upper side of the valve.

ARKWIN Hydraulic Engine...

ARKWIN INDUSTRIES has been designing and manufacturing engine actuators for over 60 years for operation with fuel, engine oil and hydraulic oil pressurization. Their actuators are used on numerous civil, military, and industrial applications to provide actuation force to direct engine control components. They differ from conventional hydraulic actuators, a major difference being the incorporation of the fire resistance features necessary to meet engine safety requirements. Engine actuators are frequently exposed to elevated temperature during normal operation. If extended periods of flame resistance are required, protective coatings can be applied to the actuator housings including the use of intumescence or ablative coatings. Where temperature permits, ARKWIN uses aluminum alloys. For higher operating  temperatures or pressure requirements exceeding the allowables of aluminum alloy, stainless PH steel alloys or titanium alloys can be provided. Two stage sealing is common for both static and dynamic seals. Specifically selected seal compounds allow zero external leakage, long durability life, high temperature resistance, while providing protection in fire.

ARKWIN’s  engine actuators feature a high side load tolerance to ensure long piston life, high resistant wear plating, high reliability/low maintenance and fire resistance. Their key design characteristics include:

• Fuel and petroleum based operating fluids

• Operating pressures up to 4,000 psig

• Position feedback of the actuators is provided by integral or externally mounted LVDT’s.

• Multiple mounting options

• Servo valve applications (Control of actuators through external pressurization valving or through an integral electro hydraulic servo valve).

• Master/Slave configurations

ARKWIN’s  engine actuators are offered for different platforms including:

CFM International CFM56-2/-3, CFM56-5/-7

General Electric CF34-3, CF34-8C/E, CF6, F110, F404,  F414, LM2500, LM6000, TF34

ARKWIN EXCHANGE PROGRAM: ARKWIN’s commercial and industrial gas turbine engine actuator exchange program was developed for the CFM56-5/7, CF6-80C2, CF6-80E1, CF34-8C/E, LM2500, and LM6000 engines.  The program provides operators the reliability of OEM NEW products at competitive prices. Qualifying actuators are exchanged in a very short time for FACTORY NEW OEM production units complete with FACTORY NEW OEM and a three-year/6000 EOH warranty. CASTROL™ 5000 Synthetic...

Turbine engine oils (abbreviated as TEOs), also known as jet oils, turbo oils are specialty lubricants designed to support the operation of turbine engines. Apart from their lubricating function of the engine,  gearbox, shafts and associated accessories, TEOs have two additional functions. Their various additives protect the components from corrosion, and filter contaminants in the engine such as carbon deposits (coking) while TEOs are also used as heat transfer fluids, cooling the engine in temperatures reaching 1000°C, in turn extending the life of the oil up to 25,000 hours of operation. TEOs have been initially developed as mineral and and subsequently innovated to synthetic.

Castrol™ 5000 is a 5 centistoke "Type II" synthetic lubricant designed for use in modern gas turbine engines operating at bulk oil temperatures exceeding those which "Type I" oils can successfully withstand. It  is a clear, amber-colored fluid having the appearance of a thin oil with a faint aromatic odor. It is based on a blend of high quality hindered esters and additives used to offer a product with excellent high temperature and oxidation stability, good load-carrying properties and complete compatibility with engine and accessory constructional materials, such as metals and elastomeric sealing compounds.

Castrol™ 5000  is compatible with other MIL-PRF-23699F Std, 5 centistoke gas turbine lubricanrts such as AEROSHELL® 500, 560, EXXONMOBIL® Mobil Jet Oil II, EXXONMOBIL® Mobil Jet Oil 254, EASTMAN Turbo Oil 2380™ and others. However, it is unwise to mix grades of different viscosity.

Castrol™ 5000  oil  is not compatible with mineral oils and while it is miscible with phosphate ester hydraulic fluids, the latter will have a detrimental effect such as coking propensity and resistance to corrosion.

Airboxes are used in ROTAX® aircraft engines to remove SOME of the difficulties created by having two independent induction systems. They simplify sourcing the air for both carburetors. Depending on the installation, the air temperature and/or pressure within the engine cowling may be significantly different on each side. Airboxes make it easy to run a single intake hose to a point on the aircraft where preferred ambient air can be obtained. They also make the provision of the same carb heat air simpler to each carburetor.
