PROPULSION SYSTEMS & PARTS

Aircraft Engines Propellers and Parts

Propulsion systems are a set of components and integrated technologies designed to generate thrust and move an object such as a car, aircraft, spacecraft, ship or others. In aircraft applications these propulsion systems include a power generating source such as an internal combustion engine, a jet engine or turboprop engine as well as an engine driving propeller or propelling nozzle depending on the application. This category includes at present Certified (aka Certificated) and Non-Certified (aka Non-Certificated) (*) aviation fuel reciprocating (piston) or rotary, gas turbine and jet aircraft engines, propellers, parts & accessories from reputable European, US and other manufacturers, structured in sub-categories based on different manufacturers. Propulsion systems and related parts for use in automotive, marine or industrial applications will also be added over time.

Commonly used certified engines in General Aviation are piston engines of TEXTRON LYCOMING and CONTINENTAL AEROSPACE TECHNOLOGIES (formerly CONTINENTAL MOTORS) but also certain models of BPR ROTAX.

Non-certified engines and propellers are those used in amateur-built / experimental airplanes or rotorcraft, ultra lights, light sport aircraft (LSA) gliders used for recreational flights (non-commercial operations). A wide selection of non-certified  piston engines (also commonly referred to as reciprocating engines) are offered including pre-assembled engines, Test Run and Ready to Fly, as well as engine kits for local assembly by the buyer as per manufacturer’s instructions. Produced by US, European and other manufacturers, together with an extensive range of related parts and accessories, they intend to cover diverse application needs of their prospective users. They come either as engines initially designed for aviation uses or automobile (car) converted engines in different power outputs, number of cylinders, cylinder configurations, features and specifications (direct drive or with gearboxes, different fuel delivery and cooling systems, and so on). Offered by well known manufacturers of certificated engines such as TEXTRON LYCOMING and CONTINENTAL AEROSPACE TECHNOLOGIES) but also by BPR ROTAX and other engine builders (MWFLY, JABIRU, Sonex Aircraft AEROCONVERSIONS, HUMMEL ENGINES, GREAT PLAINS AVIATION SUPPLY, VIKING, AEROMOMENTUM to name a few). More information is available in our Aviation Piston Engines  & Parts section.

(*) The terms "Certified" and "Certificated" are used interchangeably with the same meaning. Certified engines are those included in the '' Type Certificate'' of an aircraft model ensuring that both the aircraft and all its component parts (including propellers, engines, etc.) is compliant with all applicable airworthiness requirements and safety standards. Certificated aviation engines are sourced from specific manufacturers holding respective approvals from their respective Civil Aviation Authorities (CAA) and respective authorities in other countries based on bilateral signed agreements.

DUC FLASH Inconel® Aircraft...

The FLASH propeller range manufactured by Duc Hélices feature an innovative design, specifically about its twisting axis and center of pressure.Their aerodynamic design allows a "constant speed" effect, limiting variations in engine speed between on ground and in flight. They also enable high efficiency throughout the flight envelope, improved takeoff and climb rate due to higher engine speed, high cruise extension in flight, high engine efficiency and user comfort.

The blades and the hub of the FLASH propeller range are manufactured according the DUC Hélices company technologies, from unidirectional layers of carbon fibers prepreg epoxy resin. Their composite structures are defined to obtain the maximum stresses in torsion and bending. Therefore "constant speed" effect is not related to deformation of the blade but its geometry and specific profile. Due to its specific geometric definition, excellent performance is obtained in both aerodynamic and acoustic, but also in consumption. The leading edge of the FLASH blades is equipped with a metallic shielding in Inconel®, a refractory stainless material with a very high surface hardness.

Depending on the model, FLASH propellers are offered with two, three or four blades, in tractor or pusher configurations (right & left rotation) and different diameters.

EXXONMOBIL® MOBIL™ Turbo...

EXXONMOBIL® Mobil Turbo 319A-2 is a fully synthetic lubricant developed to meet the performance requirements of Russian gas turbine aircraft engines which operate on mineral-oil-based lubricants. Formulated from a synthetic hydrocarbon combination of polyalphaolefin (PAO) and hindered ester based stock, Mobil Turbo 319A-2 is fortified with a unique chemical additive system. The resulting product has far superior thermal and oxidation stability than mineral-oil-based lubricants. The ability of Mobil Turbo 319A-2 to resist deterioration and deposit formation allows the potential for extended oil drain intervals and less frequent maintenance.

The closely controlled viscosity of Mobil Turbo 319A-2 at -51º C, along with a -60ºC pour point, ensure good low-temperature fluidity, permitting engine starting and lubrication at low temperatures. Mobil Turbo 319A-2 exhibits excellent bulk oil stability at temperatures up to 200º C (392º F). The evaporation rate of Mobil Turbo 319A-2 at high temperatures is significantly lower than mineral-oil-based products, and helps minimize oil consumption. FLOSCAN Series 200 Fuel...

Series 200 Turbine Flow Transducers by FLOSCAN INSTRUMENT CO. INC. measure flows of hydrocarbon fuels such as gasoline, kerosene, and #2 diesel fuel and other light transmitting, non-corrosive liquids of similar viscosity.  Typical fuel flow applications include aircraft fuel monitoring systems; gasoline, diesel, and gas turbine engine test stands; and industrial furnaces. The transducers give repeatable signals on gasoline across a 100 to 1 flow range down to 0.3 GPH.  The higher viscosity of diesel fuel reduces signal repeatability at flow rates below 2 GPH.  Pressure drops are very low compared to other turbine flow transducers.  The transducer bearing system is rated for continuous operation at the upper end of the flow range. The transducers produce a current pulse signal from an opto-electronic pickup with a preamplifier.

Because of their superior accuracy and extraordinary repeatability, FLOSCAN transducers have quickly become the dominate fuel flow measuring sensors for general aviation but are also used in marine and other applications.

FLOSCAN aviation products are NOT TSO, PMA or STC'd.

JABIRU Generation 4...

Jabiru 4th Generation Aircraft Engines include 2 horizontally opposed four-stroke air-cooled direct drive aviation engines designed and manufactured to ASTM F2339, Jabiru four-cylinder 2200 and 3300 six-cylinder with respective rated power of 85hp (63kw) and 120hp (88kw) @ 3300rpm.

The crankshaft is forged from 4140 chrome molybdenum alloy steel, Magna flux inspected with precision ground journals. The propeller is directly crankshaft driven resulting in reduced weight and low maintenance costs. The crankshaft features a removable propeller flange for easy replacement of the front crankshaft and installation of a propeller shaft extension if required. Both tractor or pusher installations are possible.

Cylinder heads are cast aluminum and screwed to aluminum cylinders to form a one-piece assembly. The cylinder barrels are electrolytically coated with silicone carbide (ceramic) in a nickel matrix. Pistons are Jabiru designed. Valves are 7mm (stem dia) which are purpose manufactured for the Jabiru engines.

An integral alternator using rare earth magnets provides alternating current for battery charging and electrical accessory drive. The alternator is attached to the flywheel and is driven directly by the crankshaft.

The ignition system is a transistorized electronic system; two fixed coils mounted adjacent to the flywheel are energized by rare earth magnets attached to the flywheel.

The ignition system is fixed timing and, therefore, removes the need for timing adjustment. The dual ignition system is self-generating and does not depend on battery power.

An internal gear pump direct-mounted on the camshaft and incorporating a small automotive spin-on filter, provides engine lubrication. All installations require an oil cooler to meet oil temperature limits.

The engines are fitted with a 1.2 kw starter motor.

The fuel induction system comprises a pressure compensating carburetor.

The standard engines are supplied with two RAMAIR cooling ducts, which have been developed by Jabiru to facilitate the cooling of the engine and direct air from the propeller to the critical areas of the engine, particularly the cylinder heads and barrels.

An effective stainless-steel exhaust and muffler system is fitted as standard equipment.
