Turbine Engines & Parts

Turbine engines come in different types, in all shapes and sizes and they are nowdays used in an extensive range of applications from aircraft and vessels to power generation plants. This category includes light gas turbines but also parts & accessories from their respective manufacturers for other turbines used in aerospace and industrial applications. Lubricants and other consummables for turbines listed in Lubricants & Chemicals category are also included. Whenever applicable, the terms "Certified" and "Certificated" are used interchangeably  for those turbines where prior certification by competent authorities is required prior to their installation and use.

Gas Turbines

Gas turbines (aka combustion turbines) used in aerospace applications range from small gas turbines for the propulsion of radio-controlled flying aircraft, experimental aircraft and other flying platforms to those powering airliners and fighters.

They can be classified in the following 4 main types: turbojets, turboprops, turbofans and turboshafts. While all have their differences, they way they produce power is essentially the same: intake, compression, power, and exhaust. The air intake in front of the engine smoothly directs air into the compressor blades. The compressor, driven by the turbine in the rear of the engine, compresses the incoming air through the compressor blades, significantly increasing its pressure. The high pressure air is then combined with fuel in the combustion chamber, and the mixture is ignited. As the fuel/air mixture burns, it continues through the engine toward the turbine. The turbine, consists of a series of 'fans', which work like a windmill, absorbing energy from the high speed air passing through it. The turbine blades are connected to and turn a shaft, which is also connected to the compressor blades at the front of the engine. The high speed burned fuel/air mixture exits the engine through an exhaust nozzle. As the high speed air exits the rear of the engine, it produces thrust, and pushes the airplane (or whatever it's attached to) forward.

- Turbojet Engines, the first type of gas turbine engine invented. Their major strengths include their relatively simple design, capability of very high speeds, and  little space for their installation. However, they are noisy, have a high fuel consumption and a poor performance at slow speeds

- Turboprop Engines, turbojet engines connected to a propeller through a gearing system. These engines are very fuel efficient and best performing at mid-range speeds between 250-400 knots and altitudes of 18,000-30,000 feet. However they exhibit limited forward airspeed and significant weight due to their gearing systems.

- Turbofan Engines, combining the best characteristics of turbojets and turboprops. These include a ducted fan to the front of a turbojet engine. The fan creates additional thrust, helps cool the engine, and lowers its noise output. Used widely in airliners as they are fuel efficient and quieter than turbojets. On the other hand turbofan engines are inefficient at very high altitudes, heavier than turbojets, and require a larger frontal area.

- Turboshaft Engines, used on helicopters. The biggest difference between turboshafts and turbojets is that turboshaft engines use the majority of their power to turn a turbine, rather than produce thrust out the back of the engine. These engines exhibit  a much higher power-to-weight ratio than piston engines while being typically smaller than them. Their cons include noise and complexity of gear systems connected to the shaft.

Hydro Turbines

Hydro turbines are used in hydroelectric power plants. They transfer the energy from flowing water to a rotating shaft to generate electricity. Hydro turbines rotate or spin when water reaches their blades.

Steam Turbines

Steam turbines are widely used in power generation running on continuous operating schedules and extreme operating conditions, such as water contamination or extreme temperatures. As such, steam turbines may face numerous performance problems.

Aero-Derivative Gas Turbines

Aero-Derivative Gas Turbines, lightweight and compact designs adapted from aircraft jet engines. They operate at higher compression ratios and efficiencies but have lower power outputs. Mostly used in renewables allowing them  to operate when needed, saving fuel and maintenance.

ARKWIN Hydraulic Engine...

ARKWIN INDUSTRIES has been designing and manufacturing engine actuators for over 60 years for operation with fuel, engine oil and hydraulic oil pressurization. Their actuators are used on numerous civil, military, and industrial applications to provide actuation force to direct engine control components. They differ from conventional hydraulic actuators, a major difference being the incorporation of the fire resistance features necessary to meet engine safety requirements. Engine actuators are frequently exposed to elevated temperature during normal operation. If extended periods of flame resistance are required, protective coatings can be applied to the actuator housings including the use of intumescence or ablative coatings. Where temperature permits, ARKWIN uses aluminum alloys. For higher operating  temperatures or pressure requirements exceeding the allowables of aluminum alloy, stainless PH steel alloys or titanium alloys can be provided. Two stage sealing is common for both static and dynamic seals. Specifically selected seal compounds allow zero external leakage, long durability life, high temperature resistance, while providing protection in fire.

ARKWIN’s  engine actuators feature a high side load tolerance to ensure long piston life, high resistant wear plating, high reliability/low maintenance and fire resistance. Their key design characteristics include:

• Fuel and petroleum based operating fluids

• Operating pressures up to 4,000 psig

• Position feedback of the actuators is provided by integral or externally mounted LVDT’s.

• Multiple mounting options

• Servo valve applications (Control of actuators through external pressurization valving or through an integral electro hydraulic servo valve).

• Master/Slave configurations

CASTROL™ 5000 Synthetic...

Turbine engine oils (abbreviated as TEOs), also known as jet oils, turbo oils are specialty lubricants designed to support the operation of turbine engines. Apart from their lubricating function of the engine,  gearbox, shafts and associated accessories, TEOs have two additional functions. Their various additives protect the components from corrosion, and filter contaminants in the engine such as carbon deposits (coking) while TEOs are also used as heat transfer fluids, cooling the engine in temperatures reaching 1000°C, in turn extending the life of the oil up to 25,000 hours of operation. TEOs have been initially developed as mineral and and subsequently innovated to synthetic.

Castrol™ 5000 is a 5 centistoke "Type II" synthetic lubricant designed for use in modern gas turbine engines operating at bulk oil temperatures exceeding those which "Type I" oils can successfully withstand. It  is a clear, amber-colored fluid having the appearance of a thin oil with a faint aromatic odor. It is based on a blend of high quality hindered esters and additives used to offer a product with excellent high temperature and oxidation stability, good load-carrying properties and complete compatibility with engine and accessory constructional materials, such as metals and elastomeric sealing compounds.

Castrol™ 5000  is compatible with other MIL-PRF-23699F Std, 5 centistoke gas turbine lubricanrts such as AEROSHELL® 500, 560, EXXONMOBIL® Mobil Jet Oil II, EXXONMOBIL® Mobil Jet Oil 254, EASTMAN Turbo Oil 2380™ and others. However, it is unwise to mix grades of different viscosity.

Castrol™ 5000  oil  is not compatible with mineral oils and while it is miscible with phosphate ester hydraulic fluids, the latter will have a detrimental effect such as coking propensity and resistance to corrosion.

For additional information and specifications please refer to the supplied documentation.
