Metals

Metals Category Image

This category includes a range of metals such as steel, aluminum and others, in different alloys and tempers, used for manufacturing products in different forms (sheets and plates, bars/rods, tubes, wires, etc.). They are widely encountered in aerospace, automotive and many other industrial sectors. Alloys are created by adding small amounts of metallic elements into the base metals to improve their characteristics. These “alloying” elements allow a base metal to improve its attributes and better respond to the requirements of specific applications. Alloy metals an be classified in a variety of different ways depending on their composition (e.g. carbon, low-alloy or stainless steel, in the case of steels), manufacturing methods, finishing method (such as hot rolling or cold rolling), product form (bar, sheet, tube, etc), heat treatment (such as annealing, quenching and tempering), required strength level  as specified in ASTM standards) and others. Because of the wide variety of chemical compositions possible and the fact that some steels are used in more than one heat-treated, condition, some overlap exists among the alloy steel classifications.

In the case of aluminum alloys, each alloy has attributes such as high strength, conductivity, and even resistance to environmental effects.  A naming system using four-digit designators has been developed by the US Aluminum Association, to organize them. The first digit represents the specific alloying elements and general characteristics of the group, or the “series”.

In selecting an alloy, its mechanical properties should be carefully considered. The mechanical properties of different alloys differ based on how they are heat treated, or made stronger using the tempering process.

Some important measures when considering mechanical properties include the yield strength, ultimate strength, shear strength, fatigue strength, as well as the modulus of elasticity and shear modulus. The yield strength describes the maximum amount of stress needed to elastically deform the part in a given loading arrangement (tension, compression, twisting, etc.). The ultimate strength, on the other hand, describes the maximum amount of stress a material can withstand before fracturing. Before the fracture point, the material will undergo plastic (or permanent) deformation, and will not return to its original shape. For static applications, the yield strength is the more important design constraint as per industry standard design practices; however, the ultimate strength can be useful for certain applications where this kind of deformation is possible. The shear strength measures the maximum amount of “shearing” stress that a material can experience before it permanently deforms. Fatigue strength is the ability of a material to resist breaking under cyclical loading, where a small load is repeatedly imparted on the material over time. This value is useful for applications where a part is subject to repetitive loading cycles such as vehicle axles or pistons. The modulus of elasticity and shear modulus are measures of a material’s resistance to deformation.

Sourced from different manufacturers they are offered as their OEM parts or as parts of our own labelled (AVIATIONEU NEW ERA) product lines. They can be supplied in different Metric pre-cut ot cut-to-order (CTO) dimensions and heat treatments (tempers) and they are sold in pieces or bulk (tons). A brief overview of offered BS-L metal products commonly used in Aerospace with reference to the commercial (trade) name of the respective aluminum alloy, and their correlation to their US Standards' counterparts is included below (see table). Depending on application requirements,  certain US Standard metals can be used as alternatives to their BS-L counterparts.

2014/2014A(*)

Applicable forms: plates, sheets and strips, bars, tubes as per respective BS-L Standards.

The 2014 aluminum alloy is high-strength aerospace alluminum alloy alloyed with copper (3.90-5.00%). Often includes cladding with 1050A aluminium and heat treated to T3  or T4 conditions, as in the case of sheets, to meet respective BS L163, and BS L164 Standard specifications.  Clad sheets are typically used in aerospace and defense components, structural and high technology applications. Use of copper enables them to retain their high strength after their heat treatment while cladding, as part of the mill production process, enhances their corrosion resistance capabilities.

AVIATIONEU NEW ERA 2024...

One of the most versatile metals in manufacturing today is Aluminum used to produce products in an almost limitless number of shapes for an almost limitless number of uses.

AL2024, the so-called aircraft aluminum, is an aluminium alloy, with copper as the primary alloying element. It is used in applications requiring high strength to weight ratio, as well as good fatigue resistance, weldablility and average machinability. The addition of copper to this alloy makes 2024 one of the strongest aluminum alloys. It comes in different tempers (O without heat treatment or T with heat treatment). It is non-magnetic and heat treatable but it also is more succeptible to corrosion than most other aluminum alloys.

Due to the poor corrosion resistance of this alloy  it is often clad (specified as CLAD or ALCLAD) in which case high-purity aluminium surface layers are metallurgically bonded to the aluminium alloy core material. 2024-T3 is typically used in structures where a high strength to weight ratio is necessary, clock parts, computer parts, hydraulic parts, bolts, valves, nuts, pistons, and gears.

Aluminum 2024 tubes/pipes are offered as part of our own branded (AVIATIONEU NEW ERA) product lines.Tubes are designed to act as structural support, whereas pipes are designed to carry liquids and gases. AL2024 tubing comes in different shapes (round, square, orthogonal and others), tempers, dimensions and pre cut or cut to order lenght options with the ability to be heat treated for even higher strength, all at an affordable price.

Two of the most commonly used processes for shaping aluminum include the extrusion and the drawing process. In the drawn aluminum tubing process the aluminum is pulled, or drawn into the die cavity, during which it undergoes what is called plastic deformation where the aluminum is stretched to achieve the desired shape. Drawn aluminum is most often used to create products including pots, cans, tubes and other circular objects. In the extrusion tubing process the formed shape is achived by first heating the aluminum to a very high temperature until it is soft and malleable but not liquid. Then it is forced or pushed through a die which enables molding and shaping of the desired final product. After extrusion, the finished extruded tubing product  begins to cool and harden becoming strong and durable and holding the desired shape.

The AVIATIONEU NEW ERA Aluminum alloy round tubes 2024 T3 temper are frequently used for aerospace as they offer an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, high fatigue resistance, and average machinability. They are offered as drawn and are available in different outer diameters, wall thicknesses and pre cut lengths in inches. Depending on the producer they meet AMS -4088, AMS -WW-T-700/3 and ASTM B210 specifications. AVIATIONEU NEW ERA 4130...

Steel alloy 4130 (ST4130), also known as Chrome Moly after the 2 key elements of its composition, chromium, and molybdenum, is a general-purpose alloy steel widely used by the aviation and motorsports industries due to its tensile strength of 90,000 psi, weldability, fabrication, and mild hardenability in all offered forms (tubes, bars, sheets and plates). They are available in two different material states (Normalized and Annealed) depending on the process of how the material is heated and cooled.

The Normalized condition (sometimes referred to as "Condition N") is the harder and stronger condition and is best used when forming is not needed. Normalizing relieves internal stress on steel and improves toughness in steels that may harden after the cold working process. The Annealed condition (sometimes referred to as "Condition A") is the softer and formable condition and is best used when forming is needed. Annealing relieves internal stresses, softens and makes the material more ductile.

4130 alloy steel (Chromoly) tubes exhibit an excellent strength to weight ratio, they are malleable, very easy to weld, resistant to scaling and oxidation and have a clean, smooth finish on both the inside and the outside of the tubing. Square tubes are offered in Normalized (N) condition as part of our own branded (AVIATIONEU NEW ERA) product lines and conform to SAE AMS-T 6736 & AMS 6360 M(*) specifications. They can be furnished in different wall thicknesses, widths and heights in inches and in different pre cut lengths from 1 foot to 12 feet. Appearing selling prices are per foot of cut length. Unless otherwise mentioned, there is additional cost if manufacturing test reports are required. For additional information, please refer to the supplied documentation or contact us.

AVIATIONEU NEW ERA...

Aluminum alloys 6061 and 6063 (AL6061/AL6063), with magnesium and silicon as their major alloying elements, are both popular alloys used in extrusions for a variety of architectural, machinery, equipment, and consumer products. Similar in composition & mechanical properties they come as O (annealed), or in tempered grades. Their magnesium content provides increased strength, and silicon reduces their melting temperature. Their formability, weldability, corrosion resistance, and moderately high strength enhance their versatility. However, there are differences between them and factors affecting their suitability for different applications. 6061 aluminum is the most commonly used aluminum alloy in the world used in all kinds of applications ranging from electronics to welded assemblies. Compared to AL2024 (aka aircraft aluminum) 2024 aluminum’s higher yield strength makes it more suitable if strength is a priority. 6061 tubes, sheets, bars, and plates offer high- to moderate strength, excellent corrosion resistance, and superior machinability and weldability while 6063 aluminum tubes offer an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, superior corrosion resistance, and a fine appearance and finish.

AVIATIONEU NEW ERA 6061...

Aluminum alloy 6061 is the most commonly used aluminum alloy in the world due to its positive characteristics. It has magnesium and silicon as its main composition elements and is a cold-treated aluminum forging product with the advantages of 4000 Series and 5000 Series. Aluminum 6061, T6 or T651 tempered sheets exhibit above average corrosion resistance, excellent processability with no deformations, high strength, light weight, good weldability, and the ability to be heat treated for even higher strength, all at an affordable price. The difference between T6 and T651 tempers of an 6061 aluminum sheet is that the internal stress of T6 is relatively large and the processing will be deformed under normal circumstances; the suitable state for processing should be T651, which is based on T6 to stretch and eliminate internal stress. Both are typically used in aerospace, automotive, cameras, couplings, marine hardware, electrical components, decorative hardware, structural applications, pins, brakes, pistons, valves, and bicycle frames. Aluminum alloy 6061-T6 sheets from AVIATIONEU NEW ERA product lines are offered in different pre cut thicknesses, widths and lengths and they are PVC covered one side. They meet AMS 4027/ASTM B209 specifications.
