PROPULSION SYSTEMS & PARTS

Aircraft Engines Propellers and Parts

Propulsion systems are a set of components and integrated technologies designed to generate thrust and move an object such as a car, aircraft, spacecraft, ship or others. In aircraft applications these propulsion systems include a power generating source such as an internal combustion engine, a jet engine or turboprop engine as well as an engine driving propeller or propelling nozzle depending on the application. This category includes at present Certified (aka Certificated) and Non-Certified (aka Non-Certificated) (*) aviation fuel reciprocating (piston) or rotary, gas turbine and jet aircraft engines, propellers, parts & accessories from reputable European, US and other manufacturers, structured in sub-categories based on different manufacturers. Propulsion systems and related parts for use in automotive, marine or industrial applications will also be added over time.

Commonly used certified engines in General Aviation are piston engines of TEXTRON LYCOMING and CONTINENTAL AEROSPACE TECHNOLOGIES (formerly CONTINENTAL MOTORS) but also certain models of BPR ROTAX.

Non-certified engines and propellers are those used in amateur-built / experimental airplanes or rotorcraft, ultra lights, light sport aircraft (LSA) gliders used for recreational flights (non-commercial operations). A wide selection of non-certified  piston engines (also commonly referred to as reciprocating engines) are offered including pre-assembled engines, Test Run and Ready to Fly, as well as engine kits for local assembly by the buyer as per manufacturer’s instructions. Produced by US, European and other manufacturers, together with an extensive range of related parts and accessories, they intend to cover diverse application needs of their prospective users. They come either as engines initially designed for aviation uses or automobile (car) converted engines in different power outputs, number of cylinders, cylinder configurations, features and specifications (direct drive or with gearboxes, different fuel delivery and cooling systems, and so on). Offered by well known manufacturers of certificated engines such as TEXTRON LYCOMING and CONTINENTAL AEROSPACE TECHNOLOGIES) but also by BPR ROTAX and other engine builders (MWFLY, JABIRU, Sonex Aircraft AEROCONVERSIONS, HUMMEL ENGINES, GREAT PLAINS AVIATION SUPPLY, VIKING, AEROMOMENTUM to name a few). More information is available in our Aviation Piston Engines  & Parts section.

(*) The terms "Certified" and "Certificated" are used interchangeably with the same meaning. Certified engines are those included in the '' Type Certificate'' of an aircraft model ensuring that both the aircraft and all its component parts (including propellers, engines, etc.) is compliant with all applicable airworthiness requirements and safety standards. Certificated aviation engines are sourced from specific manufacturers holding respective approvals from their respective Civil Aviation Authorities (CAA) and respective authorities in other countries based on bilateral signed agreements.

RAPCO OEM Replacement...

Modern reciprocating-engine aircraft (especially large and high-performance ones) use electrically operated auxiliary fuel  boost and transfer pumps  to keep fuel moving toward the aircraft engine or move fuel between tanks to balance aircraft weight. Centrifugal boost pumps,  electric motor driven,  are the most common type and  are used to supply, back up the engine-driven fuel pump or transfer fuel between tanks if the aircraft is so designed. They are  most frequently  submerged in the fuel tank or located just outside of the bottom of the tank with the inlet of the pump extending into the tank. Cartridge/canister or in-tank mounted pumps supply fuel to the aircraft engine while reverse flow through the pump is prevented by check valves. The cartridge/canister design allows removal of the pump cartridge without draining the fuel tank. If the pump is mounted outside the tank, a pump removal valve is typically installed so the pump can be removed without draining the fuel tank.

The RAPCO FAA-PMA approved pumps are offered as direct replacements of the respective pumps by OEMs  such as PARKER AIRBORNE or DUKES (please refer to their separate product presentations). The letters " RA" in the beginning of the RAPCO part number are used to denote the correlation of RAPCO part number to the OEM part number. They incorporate modern design, materials, and manufacturing processes to provide high quality and performance fuel pumps at competitive prices.

These pumps can be furnished  as NEW or OVERHAUL EXCHANGE, namely new or overhauled pumps in exchange of existing customer owned units (cores). In all exchange cases,  the  full selling price of the ordered unit is charged and the core credit is refunded or credited towards future orders with us when our co-operating supplier verifies that the unit is in a reasonable serviceable condition. In the case of overhauled pumps, these are overhauled in accordance with FAA-approved process specification and come with a FAA Form 8130-3. All  RAPCO fuel pumps are thoroughly tested for guaranteed pump performance, with a worldwide distribution and a full warranty (same as OEM). For additional information please consult the supplied documentation (*) or contact us.

The AeroConversions AeroVee 2.1 is a VW conversion 2180 cc, 80 hp complete aero engine kit that can be run on AvGas or Auto Fuel. The AeroVee features dual ignition, using two spark plugs per cylinder and including four independent, solid-state ignition modules, all driven directly off the crankshaft/flywheel assembly. The AeroConversions secondary electronic ignition provides extremely reliable starting under the toughest conditions, while adding "dual-plus" ignition reliability by completing the AeroVee's quadruple-redundent ignition system. The AeroVee engine kit includes the AeroConversions AeroInjector, providing maximized power and optimized fuel economy in a simple, reliable carburetor design.

The AeroConversions AeroVee Turbo is rated as a 100 horsepower engine at sea level, and yields significant performance enhancement (an up-to 1300 fpm rate of climb, and a TAS of 175 mph at 8000') to the normally-aspirated AeroVee  2.1. It is offered as a complete kit package and can be installed in any suitable homebuilt aircraft while upgrade packages are available to convert existing 80hp AeroVee engines to the Turbo configuration.

The AeroVee Turbo utilizes the standard AeroVee-sized 32mm AeroInjector. As a "free-floating" system, boost is controlled only by throttle setting limited by a fixed waste gate and power still diminishes with gains in altitude, but losses are not nearly as-drastic as those with a normally-aspirated engine. This engine features also a dedicated thermostatically controlled turbo cooling system which weighs less-than 5 lbs. including coolant, allowing  the  turbocharger to be kept in top condition after engine shutdown. The cooling system will automatically shut-off when temperatures in the turbocharger's bearing block are reduced to specified levels, which typically takes about 20 minutes with under 0.1 volt drop in battery charge. The system is currently offered as a Bill of Materials so that customers can source at the lowest cost, and vary individual components to best fit their individual installations in a variety of airframe models.

All of the supplied engine components are brand-new, zero-time parts which can be assembled in a short period, with the aid of the respective engine assembly and installation manual, free instructional video series and free technical support from the manufacturer.
