Tanks, Adhesives & Sealants...

Integral fuel tanks in aircraft form part of their wing or fuselage structure and they are commonly met in high-performance aircraft as they are the lightest, with most space per unit of weight. Rigid removable aircraft fuel tanks are also used in some aircraft, typically made of stainless steel or aluminum alloy and riveted together. Flexible fuel tanks (aka fuel bladders) are fuel containers made of reinforced flexible materials. They share many characteristics with rigid tanks but they require a smaller opening in the aircraft to be installed. Also used in other sectors for rapid deployment of storage facilities or increase capacity of fuels (gasoline, diesel or jet fuel) but also for water, oils, or as emergency units. They are made of high-quality PVC, EVA, and TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) coated fabrics, are fully UV resistant, and can operate at temperatures from -50°C to +90°C, ensuring durability and reliability under the most demanding conditions. Made by different manufacturers, these tanks conform to commercial standards while some of them are ballistic-tolerant or engineered for mission-critical military or aerospace uses, meeting respective commercial (such as TSO-C80 and 14 CFR Part 29) as well as military specifications like MIL-DTL-6396, MIL-DTL-5578, and MIL-DTL-27422.

Related materials such as tank cleaners/degreasers, adhesives & sealants are also offered and included in this presentation.

Tank adhesives/sealants come in different compounds (chemical composition) and respective prices, and their selection heavily depends the material of the tank they shall be applied and the sealing content (water, oil, fuel, etc). The selection and use of any sealant during tank construction, maintenance or repair should always ensure sealant's compatibility with tank composition and chemical resistance to fuels or other fluids to be sealed. Commonly used sealants for tanks span from PVC, the more cost-effective but with low temperature resistance & toxic when burned, to more expensive but safer Silicone ones, with excellent flexibility, high and low-temperature resistance and biocompatibility, to Polyurethane sealants, durable but not so chemically resistant as Polysulfide, and Polysulfide rubber sealants, flexible, and extremely resistant to gasoline, ethanol and many other chemicals.

For aircraft integral fuel tanks and rigid removable fuel tanks made of metals, two-part Polysulfide sealants are often the preferred choice. For flexible Polyurethane/Thermoplastic Polyurethane (PU/TPU) fuel tanks (bladders) the bonding/sealing material itself is often a specialized PU/TPU formulation for enhanced flexibility and durability, chemical resistance to hydrocarbon fuels, solvents, and oils, impact resistance, and bonding strength compared to traditional formulations. Silicone sealants are also used depending on application requirements.

Supplied either as OEM parts or as parts of our own labelled (AVIATIONEU NEW ERA) product lines.

AIA NAS 1791/NAS 1792...

National Aerospace Standards (NAS) are voluntary standards developed and maintained by committees and working groups of subject matter experts from member companies of the U.S. Aerospace Industries Association (AIA). These standards have served as the foundation for the development of aircraft, spacecraft, watercraft, ground vehicles, machinery, and electronics.

NAS parts are most well-known for state-of-the-art, high-strength, precision fasteners, electrical connectors, splices and terminations, rod end bearings, and many other types of hardware and components. The NA prefix relates to metric standards.

Blind rivets (also commonly referred to as POP Rivets) are mainly used in applications where there is no access to the rear (blind side) of the joint. They are produced in accordance with different standards specifying their properties, sizes/dimensions, materials, finishes, installation methods & other information for their application. A benefit of blind rivets is that they are not material specific and therefore they can be used to combine two different material types together.

This listing relates to those manufactured in accordance with National Aerospace Standard NAS 1919, a U.S. industry standard for the aerospace industry created and maintained by the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA).

AIA NAS 1919 & 1921 series rivets are general-purpose, mechanically-locked blind rivets used in structural aerospace and industrial applications for creating permanent and strong joints. As structural rivets(*) they are high-strength fasteners intended for use on load-bearing applications, offering greater shear and pull-out strength, and vibration resistance. They feature a self-plugging, serrated stem and can be supplied with a protruding head  (NAS 1919 Series) or 100°  flush head (NAS 1921) style. Produced by different manufacturers (such as PCC CHERRY AEROSPACE, HOWMET AEROSPACE HUCK or TRIMAS AEROSPACE ALLFAST) they are offered in different materials (aluminum, corrosion resisting A286 stainless steel or Monel®) and finishes, different nominal shank diameter sizes & corresponding grip ranges in inches.

Both NAS 1919 & 1921 series rivets are sold under OEM brands and part numbers or as  Standard part numbers under our own branded (AVIATIONEU NEW ERA) product lines, in pieces or packs where the specified number of fasteners per pack is indicated after the letters "PK" in the product reference number (SKU). Aerospace Standard Metric...

Anchor nuts (aka nutplates or anchor plates) are terms used interchangeably and relate to stamped sheet metal fasteners with an internally threaded tube and a plate with two clearance holes for rivets. Initially designed and still extensively used in aerospace applications, they are today also used in automotive, motorsports, and other industries in blind mounted panel applications where hex nuts cannot be used or an attached nut is required for ease of maintenance. They can be Fixed or Floating, the latter being easier to install due to their built-in nut (threaded hole) able to "float" slightly thus providing a convenient connection point for threaded rods, such as bolts, from the backside. In the case of Fixed anchor nuts, the built-in nut is static (i.e. without the capability to “float”) and the threaded bolt must be positioned perfectly over the hole. Self-locking anchor nuts are those with a built-in locking mechanism preventing them from loosening over time from vibrations.

Anchor nuts are offered in Imperial (in.) and Metric thread sizes, in different materials (e.g. Carbon Steel, Steel alloys, CRES), finishes such as Cadmium or Cadmium Free Zinc Nickel platings (compliant to EU Regulations) with or without dry film lubrication. They come in various styles/configurations (e.g. with one or two lugs, full size or miniatures, countersunk, corner, right-angled bodies, etc.). They conform to different U.S., European and international standards such as the US Military MS and NASM, German DIN LN, French AFNOR NF, British BS, ISO and others.

Depending on the selected nutplate, aerospace anchor nuts are produced by different manufacurers, such as HOWMET AEROSPACE (formerly ARCONIC) or PAOLO ASTORI, and others, and offered as respective OEM parts or as parts of our own labelled (AVIATIONEU NEW ERA) product lines in the case of those used in industrial applications. Sold in pieces or packs of specified number of anchor nuts per pack indicated after the letters "PK" in the product SKU.

Anchor nuts manufactured i.a.w DIN LN 29679 standard are Metric self-locking floating two-lug low profile anchor nuts. Depending on the manufactuer, they are made from Steel Alloys (25CrMo4, DIN 1.7214.4/1.7220.3, 25CD4, SAE 4135/4140) with Cadmium or Zinc-Nickel plating & MoS2 low friction coating. Suitable for temperatures up to 235°C. Feature a tensile strength of 1100 MPa. Their counterparts of DIN LN 65016 & LN 29693 Standard  Standard (*) are made from Incoloy Alloy® A-286 (aka A286 Alloy Stainless Steel, an austenitic superalloy) and can be used for temperatures  up to 425 °C. Offered in different Metric thread sizes from HOWMET AEROSPACE (separately listed), PAOLO ASTORI and others as OEM parts. Depending on the part number they are sold mostly in pieces but also in packs.

British Standard BS-L...

The British Standards Institution (BSI) administers British Standards as the UK's National Standards body. British Standards L (BS-L) relate to different grades of aluminium alloys and light alloy materials such as magnesium and apply to different product forms (shapes) such as sheets/plates, bars and tubes.

Sourced from different manufacturers they are offered as their OEM parts or as parts of our own labelled (AVIATIONEU NEW ERA) product lines. They can be supplied in different Metric pre-cut ot cut-to-order (CTO) dimensions and heat treatments (tempers) and they are sold in pieces or bulk (tons). A brief overview of offered BS-L metal products commonly used in Aerospace with reference to the commercial (trade) name of the respective aluminum alloy, and their correlation to their US Standards' counterparts is included below (see table). Depending on application requirements,  certain US Standard metals can be used as alternatives to their BS-L counterparts.

2014/2014A(*)

Applicable forms: plates, sheets and strips, bars, tubes as per respective BS-L Standards.

The 2014 aluminum alloy is high-strength aerospace alluminum alloy alloyed with copper (3.90-5.00%). Often includes cladding with 1050A aluminium and heat treated to T3  or T4 conditions, as in the case of sheets, to meet respective BS L163, and BS L164 Standard specifications.  Clad sheets are typically used in aerospace and defense components, structural and high technology applications. Use of copper enables them to retain their high strength after their heat treatment while cladding, as part of the mill production process, enhances their corrosion resistance capabilities.

2024/2024A(*)

Applicable forms: sheets.

The 2024 aluminum alloy (with copper as the primary alloying element) is also known as aerospace grade aluminum. It is commonly used in aircraft structural applications due to its high strength and fatigue resistance and those requiring high stress & strain resistance in aviation and industrial applications. This alloy is stronger but less versatile than 6061, which is more corrosion resistant, easier to weld, and more suited to machining, but less strong than the 7075.  2024A 1050A Alclad sheets relate to BS-L Standards BS L109 and BS L110.

7075

Applicable forms: plates, sheets and strips, bars.

7075 aluminium alloy is an aluminium alloy with zinc as the primary alloying element.  It is one of the most commonly used aluminium alloys for highly stressed structural applications such as aircraft structural parts. Respective BS-L Standards for different forms of 7075 aluminum include BS 2 L95 for T651 plates, BS 2 L88 for T6 clad sheets and strips, BS L160, BS L161, and BS L70 for bars.

For additional information, please refer to the supplied documentation or contact us for a quotation.

(*) The letter "A" in the alloy classification system indicates a modified version of the respective standard alloy with generally no distinction in material properties or performance betwwen the two.

NAS 1669/1670/1750/1751 Hex...

Jo-Bolt is a trade name for an internally threaded three-piece rivet. A Jo-Bolt consists of three factory preassembled parts, a threaded steel alloy bolt, a threaded steel nut, and an expandable stainless steel sleeve. During installation the bolt is turned while the nut is held. This causes the sleeve to expand over the end of the nut, forming the blind head and clamping against the work. When driving is complete, a portion of the bolt breaks off. The high shear and tensile strength of the Jo-Bolt  fasteners makes them suitable for use in high-stress applications where some of the other blind fasteners would not be practical. Other advantages include their excellent resistance to vibration, weight saving, and fast installation by one person. Jo-Bolts are often encountered in the permanent structure of late model aircraft, in areas which are not often subjected to replacement or servicing. Manufactured to different aerospace standards such as NAS 1669, 1670, 1750, or 1751 they are offered as OEM parts of their respective producers or as respective Standard part numbers under our own labelled (AVIATIONEU NEW ERA) product lines.

AVIATIONEU NEW ERA AISI...

SAE AISI(*) 1018 (G10180**) (separately presented) & 1020 (G10200**) mild/low carbon steel grades are are iron alloys with basically identical composition. Please refer to the supplied documentation for the comparison of SAE AISI 1018/1020 steel properties and additional information provided at the Product Description section. Technical data of supplied materials should be used ONLY FOR REFERENCE, NOT FOR DESIGN, and any decisions on their use remain entirely at the buyer discretion.

SAE AISI 1020 steel, aka C1020 steel in cold worked condition, is one of the most commonly used plain carbon steels. It is a low hardness and tensile strength carbon steel alloy with Brinell hardness ranging between  119 - 235 and tensile strength between 410 - 790 MPa. It features high machinability, high strength, high ductility and good weldability by most welding processes supporting its use in all industrial sectors. Due to its low carbon content, it is resistant to induction hardening or flame hardening but carburization or carbon nitriding can be applied to achieve a hardness value of more than  Rc65.  Normally used in turned and polished or cold drawn conditions.

Sourced from quality producers, SAE AISI 1020 steel tubes are offered as part of our own branded (AVIATIONEU NEW ERA) product lines. They can be furnished Normalized, Annealed or in other conditions, in different specifications, different shapes (cross sections), round, square, rectangular, etc. and dimensions in inches or millimeters (depending on the supplier) to meet project requirements. In the case of Metric round tubes, they are cold drawn seamless tubes available in different outer diameters and wall thicknesses in mm and pre cut or cut to order lengths in meters or centimeters. Those in inch system  are offered as DOM (Drawn Over a Mandrel***), with outer diameters and wall thicknesses in inches and lenghts in inches or feet.  Although they are welded tubes, the weld line becomes nearly undetectable during the manufacturing process and they are often referred to as seamless. Appearing prices for pre cut tubes are per piece in indicated dimensions.

AVIATIONEU NEW ERA INCONEL®...

Inconel® is a registered trademark of Special Metals Corporation (SMC) for a family of austenitic nickel-chromium-based superalloys. Inconel® suitability for extreme pressure and heat environments and corrosion resistance allow its use in most demanding operating conditions. Even compared to stainless steel, Inconel® has an incredibly high tolerance for extreme heat, and doesn’t lose as much tensile strength at 2,000°F as most steel alloys.  Inconel® alloy comes in different grades (variations) such as 600, 601, 617, 625, 686, 690, 693, 718, 725, 751, 783 and others. It also used in the production of pipes, tubes, sheets, strips, plates, round and flat bars, etc. but also in the manufacturing of other products including fittings, flanges or fasteners. Some typical sectors/fields of use of Inconel® alloy include:

Oil and gas extraction industries due to its high temperature resistance and oxidation resistant properties,

Heat treat applications, due to its resistance to extreme temperatures,

Saltwater (Marine) Applications, because of its extraordinary resistance to sodium chloride (salt) at a variety of temperatures,

Jet engines and turbines where they need to withstand extreme temperatures (low or high). At a passenger jet’s standard cruising altitude of 36.000 ft., the average air temperature is -56.3°C (-69.3°F), but the combustion process can exceed temperatures of 1.150°C (2120°F).

AVIATIONEU NEW ERA 2024...

The 2024 aluminum alloy (with copper as the primary alloying element) is often referred to as aerospace grade aluminum due to its common use in aircraft structural applications requiring high strength and fatigue resistance. This alloy is stronger but less versatile than 6061, which is more corrosion resistant, easier to weld, and more suited to machining, but less strong than the 7075, also used in the aerospace industry.

2024 aluminum alloy sheets are offered as part of AVIATIONEU NEW ERA product lines. They come as Annealed (O Temper) without heat treatment or heat treated in various tempers (such as T3,T4,T5,T6 or T651) to attain their maximum strength (*). They can be supplied in different finishes (Untreated (Bare), Anodized or CLAD (referred to as ALCLAD). Anodization makes aluminum stronger, longer-lasting, and more durable in a wider variety of environments and applications. The surface becomes three times as hard as untreated aluminum, with increased resistance to abrasion, corrosion, and physical impact damage. CLAD sheets/plates are formed from high-purity aluminum surface layers metallurgically bonded to the aluminum alloy core material providing improved protection against fracture, fatigue crack growth & corrosion resistance.

Sourced from quality producers, AVIATIONEU NEW ERA 2024 aluminum sheets/plates can be supplied in pieces (see separate presentations) or in bulk in US or Metric Tons, consisting a cost effective solution when large quantities are demanded. Depending on the selected product & manufacturer they comply with different standards.

They are available in an extensive range of stocked thicknesses & standard or cut-to-order widths and lengths in inch or metric systems. If not in stock, approximate lead time for shipping is usually 1-2 months from the time of order placement, depending on the ordered quantity. Offered prices depend on selected products and quantities.  Prices and availability are subject to confirmation with our co-operating suppliers before order placement. Minimum Order Quantities (MOQ) depend on the required product.

Transport to customer destination can be arranged at additional cost. Small quantities are usually shipped by air transport while for bulk quantities sea/sea-surface transport is used.

All AVIATIONEU NEW ERA  metals are supplied free from oil stains, dents, inclusions, scratches, oxide discolorations, corrosion, or other defects, with PVC film cover, one/two side(s), depending on the producer & properly packaged for protection during the shipment.

For additional information, please contact us.

Nuts are extensively used in a wide range of aerospace and industrial applications. Self-locking nuts are those containing a locking feature as an integral part.

Hexagon self-locking nuts of both low (thin pattern) and regular height (pattern) used in aerospace and defense applications comform to different Standards and they are designed for use in high temp installations (up to 250°F or 1200°F for those from silver-plated stainless steel). Low height self-locking nuts complied with Army & Navy AN 364 superseded by Mil Standard MS 20364 which was in turn superseded by the newer Mil Standard MS 21083. Similarly, Army & Navy AN 365 Standard relating to regular height nuts was superseded by Mil Standard MS 20365 and this in turn by MS21044. Furthermore, MS Standards have been replaced by NASM National Aerospace Standards with their part identification numbers remaining the same. For example, nuts with PNs MS21083 and NASM21083 are identical.

Regular height NASM/MS 21044 self-locking nuts and their low-height NASM/MS 21083 counterparts replace the superseeded MS 20365  / AN 365 & MS 20364 / AN 364 for respective materials and sizes but their older Standard part numbers (although cancelled) are still commonly used in the market. Sourced from quality manufacturers, these nuts are offered as part of own labelled (AVIATIONEU NEW ERA) product lines in different materials and finishes (e.g. cadmium plated alloy steel, corrosion resistant steel passivated, copper cadmium plated, aluminum alloy anodized), and different dimensions and thread sizes in inches. These nuts come either with all metal or non metallic inserts (often termed as fiberlock or elastic stop to create friction and prevent loosening from vibration) designated by the letters "C" and "A" respectively after the dash number. No letter indicates an all metal or a non metallic insert nut. They are reliable and economical fastening devices with their inserts providing a friction grip on the threads of the bolt  holdsing it securely.

The following letters after the dash in their part number indicate their materials and finishes:

"B" Copper alloy - Cadmium plated

"C" Corrosion resistant steel (stainless steel) - passivated

"D" Aluminum alloy - Anodised

"N" Steel alloy - Cadmium plated

For example, MS21044C3 is a corrosion resistance steel self-locking nut with a thread size of 10-32, while MS21044N3 is a steel alloy nut with the same thread size.

Thermocouple and thermocouple extension wires are flexible, insulated wires the first used to link a thermocouple to a temperature control device or make the sensing point (or probe) of the thermocouple while the second to extend a thermocouple signal from a probe back to the measuring instrument reading the signal over long distances.

There are different types of thermocouples conctructed from 2 conductor solid core thermocouple grade specified gauge insulated wires with a positive and negative lead and an insulated outer jacket. Types N, K, E, J, T are base metal thermocouple wires  mostly used while Types S, R and B are precious metal thermocouple wires. Common Thermocouple Wire Types are outlined below while their more detailed presentation and characteristics are included in the Product Description section.

K-Type thermocouple (nickel-chromium (nickel-silicon - nickel-aluminum). Base metal thermocouple with strong oxidation resistance with a temperature measurement capability from 0 to 1300 °C.  Main disadvantages include among others a high-temperature stability of thermoelectric potential lower than of N-type and precious metal thermocouples and a poor short-term thermal cycle stability in the range of 250-500 °C.

T-Type thermocouple (copper-copper-nickel). It has the highest accuracy and good uniformity among the base metal thermocouples and an operating temperature between -200 and 350 ℃.

J-Type thermocouple (iron-constantan ). Suitable for reducing or inert atmosphere for vacuum oxidation, and the temperature range from -200 to 800 °C.

N-Type thermocouple (NiCrSi-NiSi). Features of the thermocouple are strong anti-oxidation ability in temperature regulation below 1300 °C, good long-term stability and short-term thermal cycle repeatability, good nuclear radiation resistance, and low-temperature resistance.

E-Type thermocouple (nickel-chromium-copper-nickel [constantan] thermocouple). Its thermoelectric potential is the highest among the commonly used thermocouples. Often selected for applications in conditions of high sensitivity, low thermal conductivity, and large resistance that can be tolerated. Less sensitive than Type K to corrosion in atmospheres containing higher humidity.

Thermocouple wires of diferent types and wire sizes (Gauges) are offered as part of own labelled (AVIATIONEU NEW ERA) product lines. Priced and sold by the foot and offered in specified or cut to order lengths (usually in 10 ft increments).

In co-operation with aircraft manufacturers, AVIATIONEU NEW ERA Lease or Buy Programs have been developed for ultralight and light aircraft (*). They are generally offered as FACTORY NEW although used aircraft may be included. Depending on the selection, these can be used for recreational and business flying, pilot training, aeroclub operations or other missions (e.g surveillance or aerial photography). A range of support services are also offered (as required) depending on the leasing or buy option and the country of operations. These indicatively include initial airworthiness certification in the country of destination, user training on aircraft operations, supply of spare parts and consummables, aircraft maintenance, insurance etc. Some of these services are prerequisites in the leasing option. Please refer to the individual aircraft presentations or contact us for additional information and quotation.

(*) The term "Ultralight" is often used to denote different aircraft types across the world. In the U.S.,Ultralights are referred to as vehicles (not aircraft) and must be a single-place of very light weight. The term "Light Sport Aircraft (LSA)" is used in FAA regulations (FARs) for certification of aircraft complying with the ASTM standards and subject to specified limitations such as non-pressurised cabin, max seating capacity of two persons (including the pilot), a single reciprocating engine, a MTOW of not more than 1,320 pounds, a fixed-pitch or  ground-adjustable propeller, etc. In Europe, certification of Ultralights falling under Annex II of the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Basic Regulation is handled under national rules. EASA has introduced a new certification process for the European Light Aeroplane (ELA) considered as a simple two-seater non-pressurised aircraft for "non-aerobatic" and "VFR day" operations only with a single, non-turbine engine fitted with a propeller and a maximum take-off weight of 600kg.

AVIATIONEU NEW ERA Heat...

Thermal fluids (aka thermal oils, thermic fluids, thermo fluids, heat transfer fluids, heat transfer oils, hot oils, thermic oils or thermo oils.) are specialized liquids used to transfer heat from one point to another in various industrial processes, including chemical processing, oil and gas refining, and power generation. Designed to operate at high temperatures they can provide efficient and reliable heat transfer, even under extreme conditions. Selecting the right transfer fluid depends on its thermal properties, which include its viscosity, heat capacity, the heating system it’s used in, and the application itself.  When dealing with complex applications that may have multiple heat transfer options and therefore specific calculations may be required. Factors such as the temperature and pressure requirements of the application, combined with the thermal properties of a fluid and the limitations of the heater need to be considered. There are different types of thermal fluids including water, glycol, organic (derived from petroleum) and synthetic (produced from advanced chemical processes) offered under respective brands of their producers such as Eastman (Therminol®/Marlotherm®), Dow Chemical (Dowtherm™), ExxonMobil (Mobiltherm™), and others.

Key properties of heat transfer fluids include thermal stability, low viscosity, high flash and fire points, and low toxicity helping to ensure safe and reliable operation of heat transfer systems. Their selection depends on various factors, including the operating temperature range, heat transfer efficiency requirements, system design, and safety considerations.

Sourced from quality producers, thermal fluids are offered as part of our own labelled (AVIATIONEU NEW ERA) product lines in different grades and packaging options including 210-Liter drums and 26-Liter pails. AVIATIONEU NEW ERA Grade...

Grade 410 is a basic general-purpose hardenable martensitic stainless steel alloy for highly stressed requirements, providing good corrosion resistance. Martensitic stainless steels are fabricated using techniques requiring final heat treatment. These grades are less resistant to corrosion when compared to those of austenitic. Their operating temperatures are often affected by their loss of strength at high temperatures, due to over-tempering and loss of ductility at sub-zero temperatures. Quenching and tempering can harden grade 410 steels while their corrosion resistance can be further enhanced by hardening, tempering and polishing.

410 is a very common grade used in many industries such as aerospace, power generation, and general industry. Generally used for applications requiring mild corrosion, heat resistance and high strength and ductility. Indicative examples include steam / gas turbine blades and buckets, bushings, valve components, fasteners, nuclear reactor control rod mechanisms, petrochemical equipment and machine parts.
