It was one of the first turbine oils to be qualified and approved for Mil-PRF-23699 STD (Standard) class and subsequently SAE AS5780 SPC (Standard Performance Capability) class  and still one of the most widely used turbine oils in the commercial aviation industry. TURBO OIL 25™  is a high load-carrying gas turbine oil, for the most demanding gear applications. It is formulated for the high-load-carrying demands of today’s helicopter transmission systems reducing wear on critical parts and improving reliability and operation safety in transmissions and gearboxes.

TURBO OIL 274™ (formerly BP TURBO OIL 274) is a DEF STAN 91-98 oil in the 7.5 cSt viscosity class, uniquely suited for older turboprop applications. It features a good high temperature performance and load-carrying ability for long trouble-free operations under severe conditions.

AEROSHELL® 500 2nd Generation Synthetic Turbine Engine Oil from Shell Aviation is a 5 centistoke synthetic hindered ester oil incorporating additives to improve thermal and oxidational stability and also metal passivation. Developed essentially to meet the requirements of Pratt & Whitney 521 B Type II and MIL -L-23699 specifications, it is suitable for certain civil and military aero-engines requiring this class of lubricant but also approved for use in their industrial and marine derivatives which retain the essential design elements of their aviation versions. It meets the requirements of DERD 2487 (now DEF STAN 91-98) and was developed to provide a high standard of lubrication specifically for British and Russian turbo-prop engines, especially those calling for mineral turbine oils and particularly turbo-prop engines where a good load carrying oil was required for the propeller reduction gearbox. Turbine engine oils (abbreviated as TEOs), also known as jet oils, turbo oils are specialty lubricants designed to support the operation of turbine engines. Apart from their lubricating function of the engine,  gearbox, shafts and associated accessories, TEOs have two additional functions. Their various additives protect the components from corrosion, and filter contaminants in the engine such as carbon deposits (coking) while TEOs are also used as heat transfer fluids, cooling the engine in temperatures reaching 1000°C, in turn extending the life of the oil up to 25,000 hours of operation. TEOs have been initially developed as mineral and and subsequently innovated to synthetic.

Castrol™ 5000 is a 5 centistoke "Type II" synthetic lubricant designed for use in modern gas turbine engines operating at bulk oil temperatures exceeding those which "Type I" oils can successfully withstand. It  is a clear, amber-colored fluid having the appearance of a thin oil with a faint aromatic odor. It is based on a blend of high quality hindered esters and additives used to offer a product with excellent high temperature and oxidation stability, good load-carrying properties and complete compatibility with engine and accessory constructional materials, such as metals and elastomeric sealing compounds. 

Castrol™ 5000  is compatible with other MIL-PRF-23699F Std, 5 centistoke gas turbine lubricanrts such as AEROSHELL® 500, 560, EXXONMOBIL® Mobil Jet Oil II, EXXONMOBIL® Mobil Jet Oil 254, EASTMAN Turbo Oil 2380™ and others. However, it is unwise to mix grades of different viscosity.

Castrol™ 5000  oil  is not compatible with mineral oils and while it is miscible with phosphate ester hydraulic fluids, the latter will have a detrimental effect such as coking propensity and resistance to corrosion.

EXXONMOBIL® AVIATION Mobil Jet Oil 254 is a third-generation oil formulated to deliver exceptional high-temperature thermal stability  (HTS), excellent resistance to coking and deposit control as well as exceptional oxidation and corrosion protection. It meets the demanding requirements of latest technology  aircraft-type gas turbines operating over a wide range of severe operating conditions.  When compared to a typical Type II lubricant, Mobil Jet Oil 254 reduces bulk oil oxidation by up to 50 percent and shows deposit control capability 50 F higher.  These properties have been confirmed in various laboratory tests including; the Corrosion-Oxidation Stability Test,  Alcor Deposition Test, Vapor Phase Coker, Erdco High-Temperature Bearing Test, Ryder Gear and the Mobil Thin Film Oxidation Test.The closely controlled low-temperature viscosity of Mobil Jet Oil 254, along with its low pour point (below -54 ºC), ensure good low-temperature fluidity to permit starting and lubrication at temperatures as low as -40 ºC.  In extensive laboratory testing and in-flight experience, Mobil Jet Oil 254 also exhibits excellent bulk oil stability at temperatures up to 232 ºC (450 ºF) for extended periods.  The evaporation rate at these temperatures is low enough to prevent excessive loss of volume.  The load-carrying ability of Mobil Jet Oil 254 comes from its synthetic base stock viscosity and, therefore, is not subject to loss from viscosity index additive shear.

Turbine engine oils (TEO) used in commercial aircraft and general aviation engines are conforming with the US military specification MIL-PRF-23699 (formerly MIL-L-23699), an essential step in the process of gaining engine equipment manufacturer approval in different engine, engine accessories and auxiliary power unit types. Although primarily a military specification, MIL-PRF-23699 has served the commercial aviation sector since the 1960s and still used today. This specification covers four oil  categories:

STD – Standard

HTS – High Thermal Stability

C/I – Corrosion Inhibited (for military use only). Oils in this category include AeroShell Turbine Oil 531, Eastman Aero-D, NYCO TURBONYCOIL 601 and Castrol AeroJet 5.

EE – Enhanced Ester

In the case of TEOs, hotter running engines with extended times between overhauls are not adequately covered by MIL-PRF-23699 for the type of oil needed in modern commercial engines requiring additionaly tighter controls

In 2005, SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) has issued SAE AS5780 to replace MIL-PRF-23699 defining two grades of oil:

SPC – Standard Performance Capability, almost identical to STD except for additional reporting items.

HPC – High Performance Capability. SAE HPC grade has more stringent performance requirements compared with the MIL-PRF-23699 HTS grade.

Most commonly used aircraft turbine engine oil brands fall under both MIL-PRF-23699 and SAE AS5780 specifications in the respective categories. 

Examples: 

- STD/SPC: Castrol 500 (*),AeroShell 500, AeroShell 560,Mobil Jet II, etc.

- HTS/HPC: Mobil Jet Oil 254, Eastman 2197, etc.

AVIATIONEU NEW ERA product range of multigrade motor oils (indicated by the letter  "W") aim to ensure proper operation of the engine, wear and damage protection of different types of petrol, gas and diesel engines installed in passenger cars, vans and trucks. They contain a low-viscosity motor oil as well as various polymer additives. The additives have little effect at low temperatures, but cause the oil to thin down in hot conditions more slowly than usual.They come in different viscocity (SAE) grades to cover respective oil viscosity needs in different temperature ranges. AEROSHELL® W15W50 Multigrade Aviation Piston Engine Oil has been specifically developed for aviation piston engines. This premium semi-synthetic multigrade ashless dispersant oil is a special blend of a high quality mineral oil and synthetic hydrocarbons with an advanced additive package that has been specifically formulated for multigrade applications. The combination of non-metallic anti-wear additives and selected high viscosity index mineral and synthetic base oils, offer exceptional stability, dispersancy and anti-foaming performance. The advanced additive package in AEROSHELL® W15W50 oil provides excellent protection to aviation piston engines operating at extreme ambient temperatures. The ashless anti-wear additive package provides exceptional wear protection for camshafts and lifters and other wearing surfaces.

AEROSHELL® W15W50 oil has become very popular amongst engine manufacturers and operators alike. In order to cater for those Lycoming engines that need improved load carrying, the Lycoming LW16702 antiwear additive has been incorporated into the formulation, thus eliminating the need for supplemental additive addition. AEROSHELL® Sport Plus 4  from Shell Aviation is a second generation multi-grade piston engine oil specifically designed for use in light sport and very light/ultralight aircraft 4-stroke engines in any climate. It is the first aviation oil in the market that is BRP-Rotax tested and meets Rotax RON 424 OEM specification. AEROSHELL® Sport Plus 4  is suitable for BRP-ROTAX 912, 914, 912 iS engine series. AEROSHELL® 100 Series SAE 50 Mineral Aviation Piston Engine Oils are  straight mineral oils blended from selected high viscosity index base oil. They are offered as AEROSHELL® 100 mineral break in oil with no additives, AEROSHELL® W100 mineral ashless dispersant oil for normal use and  AEROSHELL® W100 PLUS mineral ashless dispersant oil with a friction modifier/anti-wear additive package. They are approved for all aviation civil aircraft piston engines. The specially blended high viscosity index base oil in AeroShell oil 100 series oils has been designed to provide effective protection to engine components compared to conventional mineral oils.

AEROSHELL® 100 SAE 50 is to be used when an oil without a dispersant additive is required during the break-in of  new aviation piston engines or those recently overhauled. AEROSHELL® W100 oil includes very small amounts of pour point depressant to improve fluidity at very low temperatures and an anti-oxidant. This helps ensure complete confidence and peace of mind knowing that your aircraft will perform reliably in between scheduled overhauls.

AEROSHELL® 100 Series oils are produced to meet fully the SAE specification J-1966 (Grades SAE 50 respectively).  Furthermore, they have military qualification approval and are listed on the Qualified Products List (QPL) issued by the US Navy and on the Technically Acceptable Products List (TAPL) issued by the UK Ministry of Defence. Common packing options include 1 US Quart bottles, cases of 6  or 12 1 US Quart bottles, pails of 5 US Gallons  and drums of 55 US Gallons.

EXXONMOBIL® Mobil Turbo 319A-2 is a fully synthetic lubricant developed to meet the performance requirements of Russian gas turbine aircraft engines which operate on mineral-oil-based lubricants. Formulated from a synthetic hydrocarbon combination of polyalphaolefin (PAO) and hindered ester based stock, Mobil Turbo 319A-2 is fortified with a unique chemical additive system. The resulting product has far superior thermal and oxidation stability than mineral-oil-based lubricants. The ability of Mobil Turbo 319A-2 to resist deterioration and deposit formation allows the potential for extended oil drain intervals and less frequent maintenance.

The closely controlled viscosity of Mobil Turbo 319A-2 at -51º C, along with a -60ºC pour point, ensure good low-temperature fluidity, permitting engine starting and lubrication at low temperatures. Mobil Turbo 319A-2 exhibits excellent bulk oil stability at temperatures up to 200º C (392º F). The evaporation rate of Mobil Turbo 319A-2 at high temperatures is significantly lower than mineral-oil-based products, and helps minimize oil consumption. The lubricant has excellent resistance to foaming.
