Integral fuel tanks in aircraft form part of their wing or fuselage structure and they are commonly met in high-performance aircraft as they are the lightest, with most space per unit of weight. Rigid removable aircraft fuel tanks are also used in some aircraft, typically made of stainless steel or aluminum alloy and riveted together. Flexible fuel tanks (aka fuel bladders) are fuel containers made of reinforced flexible materials. They share many characteristics with rigid tanks but they require a smaller opening in the aircraft to be installed. Also used in other sectors for rapid deployment of storage facilities or increase capacity of fuels (gasoline, diesel or jet fuel) but also for water, oils, or as emergency units. They are made of high-quality PVC, EVA, and TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) coated fabrics, are fully UV resistant, and can operate at temperatures from -50°C to +90°C, ensuring durability and reliability under the most demanding conditions. Made by different manufacturers, these tanks conform to commercial standards while some of them are ballistic-tolerant or engineered for mission-critical military or aerospace uses, meeting respective commercial (such as TSO-C80 and 14 CFR Part 29) as well as military specifications like MIL-DTL-6396, MIL-DTL-5578, and MIL-DTL-27422.

Tank adhesives/sealants come in different compounds (chemical composition) and respective prices, and their selection heavily depends the material of the tank they shall be applied and the sealing content (water, oil, fuel, etc). The selection and use of any sealant during tank construction, maintenance or repair should always ensure sealant's compatibility with tank composition and chemical resistance to fuels or other fluids to be sealed. Commonly used sealants for tanks span from PVC, the more cost-effective but with low temperature resistance & toxic when burned, to more expensive but safer Silicone ones, with excellent flexibility, high and low-temperature resistance and biocompatibility, to Polyurethane sealants, durable but not so chemically resistant as Polysulfide, and Polysulfide rubber sealants, flexible, and extremely resistant to gasoline, ethanol and many other chemicals. 

For aircraft integral fuel tanks and rigid removable fuel tanks made of metals, two-part Polysulfide sealants are often the preferred choice. For flexible Polyurethane/Thermoplastic Polyurethane (PU/TPU) fuel tanks (bladders) the bonding/sealing material itself is often a specialized PU/TPU formulation for enhanced flexibility and durability,chemical resistance to hydrocarbon fuels, solvents, and oils, impact resistance, and bonding strength compared to traditional formulations. Silicone sealants are also used depending on application requirements.

The NYCO GREASE® range of greases includes multi-purpose or special-purpose mineral and synthetic greases for extreme applications (low and high temperatures, high speed and pressure, saline, corrosive, humid environments, etc.), compliant with civil, military aviation and industrial constraints. NYCO and ANDEROL® ROYCO® oils, greases, fluids and specialty products are used in Russian aircraft meeting the corresponding manufacturers' specifications. Although gearboxes and transmissions serve the same operational scope their lubricants differ. Generally, gear oils are used in manual gear boxes and transmission fluids in automatic transmissions. However, oils used in manual gearboxes are thicker, more viscous oils to withstand high temperatures and be able to function under extreme pressure. Those used in automatic transmissions are less viscous and thinner gearbox fluids which contain detergents and act as coolants while they contain further additives to improve their life expectancy.

BP® ENERGEAR range of automotive gear oils have been designed for use in a wide range of gear units with spur, bevel or helical gear design, including synchronized manual gearboxes, transmissions and axles under moderately severe load and pressure conditions. They combine nonmetallic additives with selected high viscosity index base stocks to give exceptional stability, dispersancy and anti-foaming performance. These additives leave no metallic ash residues that can lead to deposit formation in combustion chambers and on spark plugs, which can cause pre-ignition and possible engine failure.AEROSHELL® W100 oil includes very small amounts of pour point depressant to improve fluidity at very low temperatures and an anti-oxidant. This helps ensure complete confidence and peace of mind knowing that your aircraft will perform reliably in between scheduled overhauls. Approved to SAE specification J-1899 Grade 50. 

AEROSHELL® W100 Plus single grade oils combine the single grade, ashless dispersant performance found in AEROSHELL® Oil W100 and the anti-wear/anti-corrosion additives of AEROSHELL® Oil W15W-50 Multigrade. They are approved for all aviation civil aircraft piston engines. Approved to SAE specification J-1899 Grade 50.

EXXONMOBIL® Mobil TERESSTIC 100 Series oil. TERESSTIC is the brand name for a line of long-service-life lubricating oils. They are formulated with carefully selected base stocks and highly effective additives, including oxidation and rust inhibitors and anti-foam agents.

The TERESSTIC line of circulating oils consists of nine viscosity grades. Eight of these grades are blended to viscosity values that conform to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) viscosity classification system.

PPG AEROSPACE® – PRC-DeSoto® products are offered in different classes, specifications, application times and convenient container options including SEMCO Semkit® packages containing both the base and accelerator in one pack.

3 classes are generally used for the classification of sealants (A, B and C) although an S class does apply in some cases where a sealant can be sprayed.

Class A – Brush application, generally used on fasteners

Class B – Thicker consistency, used for fillet and injection seals

Class C – Thinner than Class B, used for fay sealing

Application times are expressed in hours (2 indicating 2 hours 1/2 indicating half an hour).

Aircraft Fuselage and Access Door Sealants are included in this presentation while respective Aircraft Firewall Sealants, Fuel Tank  Sealants, Corrosion Inhibitive Sealants and Coatings are separately presented.
