High-Speed Steel (HSS) is a metal alloy made up primarily of iron, tungsten, and carbon. It's known for its hardness, toughness, and ability to withstand high temperatures without losing its strength or shape. It also has excellent abrasion resistance properties, which make it useful for cutting tools. HSS drill bits are extremely hardwearing and particularly well designed for drilling into relatively hard metal surfaces and wood, as they are much more resistant to the heat generated from the fast speed operation. Apart from HSS, Cobalt is often used as an alloying agent in steels to improve the hardenability, strength, and wear resistance in machining applications but also due to its ability to resist wear at higher temperatures while still maintaining its strength and shape. Cobalt-based alloys are typically harder than HSS alloys but are also more prone to cracking or chipping if not handled properly. Compared to HSS drill bits which are more elastic and, as such, don't break easily, those containing cobalt are more brittle and chip quickly.
