AKZONOBEL Aerospace ECLIPSE (ECL-G) Gloss Exterior Polyurethane Top Coats SKU: AKZNBL-CTNG-PU-ECL-G

Most airplanes nowadays are painted in vibrant colors, with designs and logos that need to retain their "fresh" appearance till repaint despite their operation in  harsh weather and environmental conditions. The types of paint used on arcraft are enamel and epoxy. For more information about these 2 types of paints please refer to the Product Description section.

AKZONOBEL Aerospace Coatings is the global leader in the manufacture, development and supply of of high performance paints and coatings for civil and military aerospace applications. They are widely used in the OEM and MRO sectors of the commercial airline, general aviation and the military air markets. AKZONOBEL Aerospace Coatings product porfolio includes among others primers, polyurethane top coats, fillers, surfacers, abrasion resistant materials as well as composite, conductive, insulation & other coatings. AKZONOBEL solutions include also training, technical advice and coatings consultancy.

AKZONOBEL Aerospace ECLIPSE (ECL-G) range of Gloss Polyurethane Top Coats (aka topcoats)  are gloss, chemically cured, low VOC topcoats designed to provide distinctness of image (DOI). Their balanced formulation provides superior chemical resistance, stain resistance and flexibility. They are qualified/approved to an extensive list of specifications.

ECL-G-92 Top Coats meet Boeing BAC 701 and BMS10-60 Type I & II Class B Grade D performance specifications, ECL-G-2 Top Coats meet Boeing BMS 10-72 and  Bombardier - Canadair BAMS 565-002 specifications while ECL-G-7 Top Coats meet those of Boeing BMS 10-72 Type IX and Bombardier - Canadair BAMS 565-009.

When used with AKZONOBEL primers 10P20-44, 10P20-44M or 10P20-44MNF (depending on OEM specification), the ECLIPSE topcoats provide a durable, long lasting, protective and decorative finish that exceeds typical OEM requirements for exterior aircraft performance.

The ECLIPSE topcoats should be mixed with the AKZONOBEL Aerospace PC-233 Curing Solution and optional thinner separately sold. Please consult the supplied product Technical Data Sheet (TDS).

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS - UN1263, CL 3, III - Hazmat packaging & certification required. In addition, products in aerosol cans are generally prohibited to ship by air without Hazmat packaging & certification due to the possibility of aerosols combusting at high altitudes.

Most airplanes nowadays are painted in vibrant colors, with designs and logos that need to retain their "fresh" appearance till repaint despite their operation in  harsh weather and environmental conditions.

Most commercial aircraft repaints take place every four years (sometimes longer), often during a scheduled C- or D-check. The paint is not stripped during each cycle. Instead, they alternate between complete stripping and merely scuff-sanding the existing paint layer and applying a new topcoat.

The types of paint used on arcraft  are enamel and epoxy. Enamel paints are extremely durable and resistant to chemicals and severe weather conditions. They do not fade or oxidize easily when exposed. The varnishes used in these paints result in an instant and lasting shine when applied. They consist a low-cost option due to their lower prices compared to epoxy paints but still result in a professional look which lasts over time in rough flight conditions. They are also considered safer for the working personnel during painting as the sprayed paint on aircraft surfaces does not emit dangerous gases like epoxy paints and therefore less caution of workers' exposure is required. One extra advantages of using acrylic enamel is that the entire aircraft can be painted, including the metal parts, without extensive masking preparation.

Epoxy (polyurethane) paints are more durable  and adhere well to aircraft surfaces. These paints offer a much more flexible finish as they do not dry as hard as enamel paints and therefore they do not become brittle, crack or chip over the years. Although they are higher priced than enamels they feature  an even higher resistance to chemicals, a higher heat resistance and an effective electrical insulation, preventing a gradual loss of colour or brightness and oxidation over time and offering a superior protection. Therefore, they are often selected in cases where a higher corrosion resistance and a wear & tear resistance is desired. Single pack epoxies however will need to be overcoated using an appropriate topcoat when exposed to extreme outdoor conditions. For general purpose applications in less demanding environments, enamels are often the preferred choice.

Those most commonly encountered are the Boeing Color Coding system (BAC), the US Federal Standard 595 Color Management System (aka as SAE Aerospace Material Specification AMS-STD-595), used by the US Department of Defense to identify and specify colors for military and civilian products and RAL, a 4-digit European color coding system  administrated by the RAL Deutsches Institut für Gütesicherung und Kennzeichnung in Germany. The first digit in RAL color code is a system code number (1: yellow, 2: orange, 3: red, 4: violet, 5: blue, 6: green, 7: grey, 8: brown and 9: white and black shades).
