CHAMPION AEROSPACE Slick magnetos are offered in NEW or FACTORY OVERHAULED condition (**) in a broad range of options. Both can be supplied as exchange units to returned cores and include genuine OEM parts produced and inspected under rigorous procedures to ensure airworthiness and suitability in Slick magnetos. The factory overhauled magnetos are sourced by CHAMPION AEROSPACE authorized overhauling stations and adhere to strict CHAMPION AEROSPACE restrictions on the use of parts and service literature.

(*) In accordance with CHAMPION AEROSPACE Overhaul Manual L-1363F, the magneto should be overhauled at TBO, lightning strike, prop strike, sudden stoppage of the engine and immersion of the aircraft.

(**) NEW EXCHANGE or FACTORY OVERHAULED EXCHAGE Slick magnetos are offered in exchange of an existing customer owned unit (core) for a quick turn around. A refundable core charge is included in the selling price. This is refunded or credited towards future orders with us when a qualified core is returned and its condition is approved by our co-operating supplier within 60 days of the date of the purchase invoice. As a general rule, approvals of core returns for FACTORY OVERHAULED Slick magnetos are granted to cores of the current series of these magnetos while for NEW EXCHANGE Slick Magnetos, cores of older series of Slick magnetos can be considered for credit on a case by case basis. In all cases, the approval of a returned core remains at the exclusive discretion of our co-operating supplier and shipping back to the customer of non-approved cores are subject to additional charges.

CHAMPION AEROSPACE Aviation Piston Engine Slick Magnetos

The aviation piston engine ignition system is is a separate system (not part of the airplane’s overall electrical system) intended to provide an electrical spark to ignite the fuel/air mixture in the engine cylinders. 

Magnetos are engine-driven self-contained units that supply electrical current without using an external source of current. They are used used on most reciprocating aircraft engines equiped with a magneto type ignition system.

Modern airplane engines are required by to have a dual ignition system, namely two separate magnetos to supply the electric current to spark plugs contained in each cylinder, one magneto system supplying the current to one set of plugs, while the second magneto to the other set of plugs. The airplane’s double ignition system provides better performanceas a result of more efficient combustion and a higher level of safety through redundancy.

Slick magnetos by CHAMPION AEROSPACE find their use on nearly all piston engines and they are known for the following design features:

Smaller and lighter unique design allowing for a dimensionally smaller magneto, resulting in easier installation and lighter weight- as much as one pound lighter than competitive magnetos.

Radio noise suppression- Slick magnetos feature superior noise suppression, eliminating the need for magneto filters.

Easy to maintain- Slick magnetos use up to 50% fewer parts than the competitive aircraft magnetos. In addition, 70% of the parts in any Slick magneto are interchangeable with the comparable parts in other current production Slick magnetos.

Slick magnetos are engineered so that mechanical parts wear at a balanced rate. Consistent and complimentary wear patterns establish the recommended maintenance intervals defined in Champion Aerospace service literature, so used and service-worn parts should never be used to troubleshoot or repair a magneto, nor should original parts be replaced by used service worn parts on magnetos being returned to service.

CHAMPION AEROSPACE Slick Magnetos make timing, installation, inspection, and maintenance simpler and more convenient than ever before improving performance and service life.

Lift-off housing – Internal timing is not disturbed during inspections.

Simplified internal timing – Improved internal markings and unique Slick E-gap tool make timing easier and more accurate.

Fully sealed bearings – Keeps contaminants out and grease in for smoother operation and less maintenance.

Lower EMI Levels – Redesigned housing improves sealing and results in less radio noise.

OEM Approved – Models are available for more than 225,000 engines – all compatible with existing Slick Ignition Harnesses.

CHAMPION AEROSPACE Slick magnetos can also be economically serviced at 500-hour intervals (*). To ensure their reliability, all AD’s are complied with and high wear parts (brush, capacitor(s), points, rotor gear, impulse spring (as applicable) are replaced.
