Extruded aluminium is made by heating the aluminium and pushing it through a die to form the finished product, and subsequently cooled, stretched, and hardened at room temperature or in heated spaces for rapid tempering. A common product example for this process is aluminium tubing. In cold drawing or cold rolling forming process (sometimes referred as cold finishing) the aluminum material is pulled into a draw die or rollers, shaping the metal at room temperature. In hot rolling, the material is heated before shaping. Cold drawing improves the metal’s mechanical properties and gives a captivating finish to the finished product.

The 2024 aluminum alloy (with copper as the primary alloying element) is also known as aerospace grade aluminum. One of the most versatile metals in manufacturing today is Aluminum used to produce products in an almost limitless number of shapes for an almost limitless number of uses.

AL2024, the so-called aircraft aluminum, is an aluminium alloy, with copper as the primary alloying element. It is used in applications requiring high strength to weight ratio, as well as good fatigue resistance, weldablility and average machinability. The addition of copper to this alloy makes 2024 one of the strongest aluminum alloys. It comes in different tempers (O without heat treatment or T with heat treatment). It is non-magnetic and heat treatable but it also is more succeptible to corrosion than most other aluminum alloys. 

Due to the poor corrosion resistance of this alloy  it is often clad (specified as CLAD or ALCLAD) in which case high-purity aluminium surface layers are metallurgically bonded to the aluminium alloy core material. 2024-T3 is typically used in structures where a high strength to weight ratio is necessary, clock parts, computer parts, hydraulic parts, bolts, valves, nuts, pistons, and gears.

Two of the most commonly used processes for shaping aluminum include the extrusion and the drawing process. In the drawn aluminum tubing process the aluminum is pulled, or drawn into the die cavity, during which it undergoes what is called plastic deformation where the aluminum is stretched to achieve the desired shape. Drawn aluminum is most often used to create products including pots, cans, tubes and other circular objects. In the extrusion tubing process the formed shape is achived by first heating the aluminum to a very high temperature until it is soft and malleable but not liquid. Then it is forced or pushed through a die which enables molding and shaping of the desired final product. After extrusion, the finished extruded tubing product  begins to cool and harden becoming strong and durable and holding the desired shape.

(*) Although the terms bars and rods are often used interchangeably and present general similarities, rods come in a smaller cross sections and are usually less strong and durable than bars. Due to their strength and durability, bars are often used in structural applications while rods are typically used in non-structural ones such as reinforcing, decorative and others.

The 2024 aluminum alloy (with copper as the primary alloying element) is often referred to as aerospace grade aluminum due to its common use in aircraft structural applications requiring high strength and fatigue resistance. This alloy is stronger but less versatile than 6061, which is more corrosion resistant, easier to weld, and more suited to machining, but less strong than the 7075, also used in the aerospace industry.

2024 aluminum alloy sheets are offered as part of AVIATIONEU NEW ERA product lines. They come as Annealed (O Temper) without heat treatment or heat treated in various tempers (such as T3,T4,T5,T6 or T651) to attain their maximum strength (*). They can be supplied in different finishes (Untreated (Bare), Anodized or CLAD (referred to as ALCLAD). Anodization makes aluminum stronger, longer-lasting, and more durable in a wider variety of environments and applications. The surface becomes three times as hard as untreated aluminum, with increased resistance to abrasion, corrosion, and physical impact damage. CLAD sheets/plates are formed from high-purity aluminum surface layers metallurgically bonded to the aluminum alloy core material providing improved protection against fracture, fatigue crack growth & corrosion resistance.

Sourced from quality producers, AVIATIONEU NEW ERA 2024 aluminum sheets/plates can be supplied in pieces (see separate presentations) or in bulk in US or Metric Tons, consisting a cost effective solution when large quantities are demanded. Depending on the selected product & manufacturer they comply with different standards.

They are available in an extensive range of stocked thicknesses & standard or cut-to-order widths and lengths in inch or metric systems. If not in stock, approximate lead time for shipping is usually 1-2 months from the time of order placement, depending on the ordered quantity.
