CR SEALS power tranmission seals (formerly Chicago Rawhide) are included as an SKF brand in the company's portfolio for radial and axial shaft sealing solutions in power transmission applications. CR Seals provide superior reliability and performance by retaining lubricants, excluding contaminants, and maintaining seal integrity under pressure. Both radial and axial shaft seals are offered in different series outlined below for oil and grease sealing applications. Selecting an appropriate seal design and material depends on the intended use and the operating conditions of the application.
Oil/Grease Retention
Lubricating oils, particularly relatively low-viscosity oils, are much more difficult to retain than greases. In many grease lubricated applications, a non-spring-loaded sealing lip design or a V-ring can adequately retain the grease. More demanding applications may require HMS5 or CRW1 spring-loaded radial shaft seals. For oil retention, HMS5 or CRW1 spring-loaded radial shaft seals are recommended in order to achieve the necessary radial load and resistance to dynamic runout and shaft-to-bore misalignment for a satisfactory sealing performance. CRW1 seals are designed with SKF WAVE lips to provide improved pumping ability, regardless of the direction of shaft rotation.
Contaminant Exclusion
Contaminant exclusion can be achieved with the use of V-rings or a seal design that incorporates an auxiliary lip, for example the HMSA10 or CRWA1 seals. For tough operating conditions, SKF WAVE seals with hydrodynamic features are recommended.
Retention and Exclusion
In many applications, the exclusion of contaminants is just as important as lubricant retention. Seals with an auxiliary lip, like the HMSA10 seals, are appropriate for these applications or HDDF metal face seals in case of extremely tough operating conditions.
RADIAL SHAFT SEALS
SKF Wave Seals - Oil Applications
SKF Wave is a trusted solution used in oil applications across industries, protecting rotating equipment in even the harshest environments. SKF Wave products feature lips molded in a sinusoidal wave pattern onto a case with a metal OD to reduce shaft wear and cut down on energy consumption.
SKF Edge Seals - Oil Applications
SKF Edge products meet ISO and DIN standards, consisting of a rubber OD with specially designed seal lips to prevent downtime. Offering three times the pump rate of other solutions, SKF Edge extends service life and handles both dynamic runout and shaft-to-bore misalignment.
HM Seals - Grease Applications
HM series grease seals have been a trusted solution amongst engineers for decades. These seals divert contamination away from critical bearings and were developed to withstand a grease purge when the lip is pointing toward the air side.
SKF Flex Seals - Heavy Industrial Applications
The SKF Flex series includes heavy-duty, metal-cased, and rubber seals for heavy industrial applications. These seals are customizable to accommodate any shaft or bore size over 4 in (100 mm).
Cassette Seals - Oil Applications
The advanced SKF Wave lip technology is used for all SKF Scotseals. Scotseals include a multi-lip seal, an integrated wear sleeve, and high-performance elastomeric materials.
AXIAL SHAFT SEALS
As their name indicates, SKF axial shaft seals were designed to seal axially against a counterface perpendicular to the shaft or pin. Different series include:
V-Ring Seals
SKF V-Ring seals offer a simple-to-install solution for rotating shaft applications, including for uses as a secondary seal in highly-contaminated environments.
Metal Faced Seals
SKF metal faced seals were originally developed for severe conditions and low speeds that impact off-road and tracked vehicles, but have proven equally useful in applications exposed to sand, soil, mud, water, and more.
Axial Excluder Seals (CT1 and CT4 design)
The CT1 axial seal is a split seal that can be clamped to a housing, with a sealing lip that runs on a rotating face and excludes contaminants. CT1 axial seals can be cut to any size, from 6 in. (152 mm) to over 300 in. (7620 mm).
These seals are designed for large and very large diameters and are eminently suitable as secondary seals for applications where otherwise the primary seals would be subjected to excessive quantities of particulate contaminants or water. The seals do not rotate but seal axially against a rotating counterface. They are made of appropriately profiled strips of non-reinforced nitrile rubber which are held firmly in place by stainless steel screw-type clamps. They are available in the diameter range 150 to 4 600 mm.
SKF axial clamp seals are produced in two different designs. Axial clamp seals of the CT1 design have a flat face sealing lip and are held in position by a screw-type clamp. The maximum permissible axial displacement (operating interference) with respect to the counterface is +2,4 mm. Those of the CT4 design are extra wide and have a double clamp. The maximum operating interference is +4,8 mm. The sealing lip is flat as for the CT1 design.
