Nuts

Nuts are extensively used in a wide range of aerospace and industrial applications. This category includes an extensive collection of nuts sourced by quality producers and offered in different types, standard and miniature versions, shapes, various materials & finishes, sizes, aerospace/military or industrial (commercial) specifications/standards and packing options to meet application requirements. Aerospace/Military nuts commonly used in aircraft applications are usually made of cadmium plated carbon steel, stainless steel or  aluminum alloys and structured in different series based on the standard they conform(*). Non Military (Commercial) nuts meet DIN, ISO and other standards.

Nuts can divided into general groups such as  self-locking and non-self-locking hexagonal nuts or anchor nuts (aka nut plates).

Non-self-locking nuts are those that must be safetied by external locking devices, such as cotter pins, safety wire, or locknuts. Self-locking nuts contain the locking feature as an integral part. Anchor nuts (aka nut plates) are designed for blind mounted applications where it is impractical to use hexagonal nuts and are available in different types (fixed or floating, one lug, two lugs, corner, etc.).

Nuts are offered as part of their producers' respective brands,  or as our own branded (AVIATIONEU NEW ERA) product lines which are competitively priced and consist cost effective alternatives to the respective OEM parts. In certain cases, they are also offered as parts of aircraft and aircraft engine manufacturers. They are available in Metric(**) or Imperial systems and sold in in pieces although packs are also used, where the number of nuts per pack is indicated after the letters "PK" in the product SKU. Appearing prices are always for the used units of measurement each time. For additional information please refer to the individual product presentations, the supplied documentation or contact us.

(*) Common Aerospace/Military Fastener Standards

Army-Navy Standards (AN)

Predecessor to Mil-Spec (MS), AN fasteners are the industry standard for aircraft, indicating that these fasteners are made to military specifications to stand up to the toughest jobs without faltering.

Military Standards  (Mil-Spec, MS)

A United States Defense Standard is used to help achieve standardization objectives by the U.S. Department of Defense. Also used by other non-Defense government organizations, technical organizations, and industry.

National Aerospace Standards (NAS & NA)

“NAS” stands for National Aerospace Standard. The NA prefix is for Metric standards. NAS standards include Part Standards for high strength, precision fasteners.

Aerospace Industries Association Standards (NASM and NAM)

Aerospace Industries Association (AIA), in coordination with the US Department of Defense, has converted a number of MIL-spec's to NAS. These now carry a “NASM” (for inch based) or “NAM” (for Metric based) prefix. The standard continues to be procured to the MS part number.

(**) There is currently no military specification for Metric nut plates.

SIMMONDS®, a HOWMET® AEROSPACE business unit, specialises on self-locking & special nuts. Their self locking nuts come in different types (series) offered in different materials and sizes, and can be reused at least 15 times without affecting the nut's performance. They are lightweight and extremely durable, exhibit a very strong locking performance & can be used in a wide temperature range.

SIMMONDS® Nylstop® Type P (Standard Version) & Type T (Low Profile Version) nylon locking nuts have been designed to stop nut and bolt disengagement during use. The internal nylon ring deforms around the threads as the nut is twisted on to the bolt, ensuring a tight, vibration resistant grip on the bolt.

SIMMONDS® PH Series Aerospace quality hexagonal self-locking nuts are small, thin walled, lightweight and extremely strong. Made from  A286 stainless steel (CRES) and silver plated these nutls are particularly useful when space and weight are at a premium. Used typically in engine applications, they are MJ threaded in Meric sizes M3-M12 to meet different applications requirements.

SIMMONDS® SIMLOC® PH135M-ISO-MJ Series Hexagon Self-Locking Nuts are made of Alloy Steel 30CD4 or 35CD4 in accordance with TR 3791, heat treated for 40-43 HRC. They are Cadmium plated 5 µm mini in accordance with EN 2133 + Dry Film Lubricant in accordance with EN 2491. These lock nuts have an operating temperature up to 235°C and a 1100 MPa at ambient temperature. They are MJ threaded in accordance with ISO 5855-2 and comply with ISO 5858 standard qualification and acceptance conditions. They consist alternative parts for DIN LN 9338:2002-03 Aerospace Standard for hexagon self-locking washer nuts by various manufacturers. Offered nuts may be either parts of HOWMET SIMLOC® PH135M-ISO-MJ Series or parts conforming to DIN LN 9338:2002-03.

HM41/HM42 Series Flanged Self-Locking Nuts offered as part of HOWMET® AEROSPACE product portfolio. Made from A286 CRES per AMS 5732 or AMS 5735 specifications, they have Metric threads (M3 to M12) and are intended for use in temperatures up to 235 °C (HM42) or 425 °C (HM41). Tensile Stength 1100 Mpa. They are alternatives for DIN LN 9161 Standard nuts.

SIMMONDS® MHT Series are conical shaped self locking nuts, where the diameter of the upper part of the nut is slightly reduced. Six vertical slots open gradually whilst the nut is screwed onto the bolt. The elasticity of the particular shape of the nut will ensure the required locking torque.

For additional information on SIMMONDS® self locking nuts please refer to the Product Description section & the supplied documentation.
