Parker Hannifin (Cleveland Aircraft Wheel & Brake Division) designs and manufactures wheel assemblies for worldwide aircraft markets. Their wheels, used in conjunction with tires, provide support for the weight of the aircraft. Combined with brakes, they assist in directional and stopping control during aircraft ground maneuvers, taxi, takeoff, and landing. Cleveland Wheels and Brakes brand products are used on more than 80 percent of general aviation aircraft while their wheel assemblies are now offered for military and business aviation applications. Cleveland's different product lines include both aircraft wheel and wheel and brake assemblies for nose and main wheels to meet a variety of application requirements.
The nose wheel assembly is located under the nose of the aircraft and is the third wheel of the landing gear system. The nose wheel design consists of two halves bolted together with a tire mounted and ultimately mounted to the nose gear fork.
Nose wheels are designed to support a portion of the load requirements for the aircraft along with the main wheels. The nose wheel provides a means of steering control, if so equipped. The main wheels transmit stopping forces from the brake to the ground.
Wheels are made from either aluminum castings, magnesium castings, or aluminum forgings. The wheel is of the divided type, incorporating inner wheel half and outer wheel half, which are fastened together with tie bolts, washers, and nuts. The wheel rotates on two tapered roller bearings which seat in bearing cups, shrink fitted into the hubs. Molded grease seals provide protection and lubricant retention for the bearings. Hubcaps, when used, are secured to the outboard wheel half by a snap ring and screws.
Nose Wheel Assembly Features:
• Low maintenance for tubeless or tube-type
• Tapered roller bearings for dimensional stability and long life
• Molded grease seals for superior bearing bore sealing properties
• Split-rim design to allow ease of tire mounting
• High-strength through-bolts
• Sand castings and forgings
• Worldwide distributor network for quick parts availability
