The ICOM IC-A220 Series of VHF Air Band 760 COMM transceivers operating in 118-136.975MHz range are offered as non certified (IC-A220) or certified (IC-A220T) versions. The IC-A220 is a popular fit with experimental and light sport aircraft. The TSO/ETSO approved IC-A220T will work for all certified aircraft and it comes as a standard unit complete with install kit and mounting tray (IC-A220T), adapted unit IC-A220T-K with edge connector MBA-3 (*) fitted as a replacement for King KY96A/97A, KY196A/197A (**), Icom A200 or A210,and adapted unit IC-A220T-G with D-Sub connector MB113 as a replacement for Garmin SL40 (***).
Both IC-A220 and IC-A220T radios support 8.33 kHz and 25 kHz frequency spacings and feature OLED display, 20 memory channels and 20 history memory channels, "flip-flop" arrow button switches between main and stand-by channels, 8W output power, a built-in 2 station intercom, 12 or 24 volt compatibility and automatic squelch. They can be used for radio upgrades and replacecements of KY96A/KY97A & SL40 radios.
(*) The MBA-3 is intended for use with the Non-TSO'd model (IC-A220). Use with the TSO'd model (IC-A220T) may void the TSO.
(**) The adapted unit will not directly replace King KY96, KY97, KY196 or KY197 units.
(***) Metal work modification is required as the locking mechanism for the IC-A220T is in a different position on the SL40 tray/rack.
Key features of ICOM IC-A210 Series of VHF 760 COMM transceivers are briefly described below.
High Visibility & Readability
The OLED emits light from organic materials, so a display backlight is not required. It provides an extremely higher contrast and a very wide viewing angle of almost 180 degrees. In addition, the OLED display is set close to the front panel. Well laid out characters help identify important information like operating frequencies. White characters on a black background show clear easy to read operating information. With white key backlighting, the white OLED display matches modern plane’s instrument panel. In addition, the auto dimmer function adjusts the display for optimum brightness at day or night.
The A220’s display has a wide active area, so operating frequencies’ characters can be maximized in the display, while operating status can be shown on both top and bottom. The A220’s OLED can display 4-level gray scale from darker gray to bright white and increases readability. This gradation is used, for example, in showing selected items in the settings menu.
GPS Memory Function
A pilot with the A220 connected to an external GPS receiver can pick up the local tower frequencies and automatically store them into the radios memory. This makes for a hands free safe transaction.
Easy Channel Selection
It’s fast and easy to select any of memory channels in the A220. The "flip-flop" arrow button switches between main and stand-by channels. The dualwatch function allows you to monitor two channels simultaneously. In addition, the auto stack memory stores the last 20 channels used and allows you to recall those channels easily. All switch buttons and knobs are illuminated with pure-white backlighting that is the same color as the OLED display.
12V/24V DC power source
The built-in DC-DC converter accepts a 12/24V (11.5–27.5V) DC power source. The IC-A220 is easily installed in most airplanes or vehicles.
Intercom functions
The IC-A220 has a built-in voice activated intercom function allowing the pilot to talk with the copilot via the headset. The IC-A220 has an adjustable audio level and squelch control functions.
Easy installation
The IC-A220 has a D-Sub 25-pin industry standard connector for easy installation. The slim case can be installed into a tight panel space.
FAA TSO/ETSO Certification
The A220 TSO version (IC-A220T) meets RTCA-160G requirements for use in strict environments. It can be used for a primary VHF radio in general aviation (part 23) class aircraft while it is also accepted for ETSO approval under the TSO/ETSO reciprocal acceptance policy.
NOTE: Both the A220 & A220T VHF COMM radios will fit into the A200 tray but you need to install the MBA-3 rear connector if replacing a currently installed A200 unit.
Replacements/Upgrades
IC-A220T is available in the following three versions:
as a standard unit complete with install kit and mounting tray
as a IC-A220T-K Adapted unit with edge connector MBA-3 to serve as a replacement for Bendix King KY96A/97A, KY196A/197A or ICOM A200/A210 radios. The adapted unit will not directly replace King KY96, KY97, KY196 or KY197 units. MBA-3 can aslo be ordered separately.
as a IC-A220T-G Adapted unit with D-Sub connector MB113 to serve as a replacement for Garmin SL40 radio. However as the locking mechanism for the IC-A220T is in a different position on the SL40 tray/rack a metal work modification is required.
