Lubricants & Chemicals

Listed items in this category relate to lubricants, chemicals & other  consumables for different applications in aviation and other industries. Various lubricating tools, fittings & systems are also included in this category.

Lubricants

Lubricants are substances typically used to reduce friction between parts in contact but, depending on the type, they also perform various other functions such as heat regulation, power transmission, sealing against dust or dirt, as well as reducing oxidation and preventing corrosion. They come typically in liquid form (water, natural or synthetic oils), semi-solid form (greases), solid form (pastes) but also in other forms. Depending upon the application, one type of lubricant will work better then another. For intense friction and high-speed applications, oil-based lubricants are usually the best choice. However, for components that undergo heavy loads, or positioned or move vertically, these typically require a grease. Grease stays in place and provides a longer lasting barrier between components, such as wheel-bearings, nuts, bolts, etc. Some of the most commonly used lubricants are briefly described below.

Oils

Oils are the most commonly used lubricants in manufacturing plants. Commonly used with gears, hinges, bearings, etc. They are suitable to use in high temperatures and high-speed applications. For oxidation and corrosion prevention, it is possible to use additives such as anti-oxidants or rust inhibitors with the base oil to enhance its properties. Base oil refers to the main ingredient that is present in most lubricants. Viscosity is an important parameter in the selection of oil. It refers to the nature of flow that oil exhibits at a specified temperature. To determine the viscosity for an oil, it is necessary to understand the two types of viscosity: dynamic viscosity (a measure of fluid’s resistance to flow) and kinematic viscosity (a measure of the velocity of fluid flow).

Greases

Greases are mixes of oil, thickener (soap), and additional lubricants (such as Teflon). The mix of these components provides grease with a different texture, thickness, and viscosity.  Consistency is a defining attribute in the assessment of grease strength. It is greatly influenced by the viscosity of the base oil and the amount of thickener used. Selection of correct consistency is important in the lubricating application as soft greases can move away from the area of application while hard greases may not be able to properly move to reduce the effectiveness of lubrication. Greases generally exhibit similar lubricating properties as oils and they are used in applications where oils cannot be used or where the cooling attribute of the oil is not required. They provide excellent protection against wear and tear and provides excellent sealing against foreign particles. Often be used with gears, bearing, spindles, chains, linkages, etc.

Pastes

Pastes provide a similar working function as greases. However, they consist of a greater mix of solid lubricants resulting in their thick texture. The combined effect of base oil, thickeners (may or may not be included), and a solid lubricant such as PTFE protects against friction wear and tear. The addition of different solid lubricants makes the use of paste suitable in different types of applications.

Dry Lubricants

Dry lubricants are suitable when oils or greases cannot be used for lubrication purposes in extreme operating conditions such as vacuum, corrosive environment, or extreme temperatures. These can be classified into powdered form solid lubricants, sliding film, or bonded coatings and are usually available in spray form. They also can be mixed with water, alcohol, or other solvents.

Additives

Additives are organic or inorganic chemical compounds and consist important additions to the base oils enhancing the properties of lubricants. Most industrial applications include the following types of oil additives:

Antioxidant: To prevent oxygen from breaking down the lubricant and causing oxidation.

Extreme pressure: To increase lubricant’s ability to carry the load, for instance in gears and bearing.

Demulsifier: To enhance lubricants’ ability to repeal water.

Defoaming: To help in the breakup of foam bubbles.

Film strengtheners: To enhance the ability of lubricant film to attach to the surface.

Viscosity improver: To improve the viscosity of the lubricant at high temperatures.

Pour point: To decrease pour point temperature of lubricant in cold temperature. The pour point of an oil is measured to DIN ISO 3016. It lies a few degrees below the recommended lowest operating temperature.

Chemicals

Chemicals are sometimes termed also as lubricants but the term is most commonly used to denote surface preparation materials, paints and coatings, coolants, adhesives & sealants, cleaning products, fluids and others.

CASTROL™ 5000 Synthetic...

Turbine engine oils (abbreviated as TEOs), also known as jet oils, turbo oils are specialty lubricants designed to support the operation of turbine engines. Apart from their lubricating function of the engine,  gearbox, shafts and associated accessories, TEOs have two additional functions. Their various additives protect the components from corrosion, and filter contaminants in the engine such as carbon deposits (coking) while TEOs are also used as heat transfer fluids, cooling the engine in temperatures reaching 1000°C, in turn extending the life of the oil up to 25,000 hours of operation. TEOs have been initially developed as mineral and and subsequently innovated to synthetic.

Castrol™ 5000 is a 5 centistoke "Type II" synthetic lubricant designed for use in modern gas turbine engines operating at bulk oil temperatures exceeding those which "Type I" oils can successfully withstand. It  is a clear, amber-colored fluid having the appearance of a thin oil with a faint aromatic odor. It is based on a blend of high quality hindered esters and additives used to offer a product with excellent high temperature and oxidation stability, good load-carrying properties and complete compatibility with engine and accessory constructional materials, such as metals and elastomeric sealing compounds.

Castrol™ 5000  is compatible with other MIL-PRF-23699F Std, 5 centistoke gas turbine lubricanrts such as AEROSHELL® 500, 560, EXXONMOBIL® Mobil Jet Oil II, EXXONMOBIL® Mobil Jet Oil 254, EASTMAN Turbo Oil 2380™ and others. However, it is unwise to mix grades of different viscosity.

Castrol™ 5000  oil  is not compatible with mineral oils and while it is miscible with phosphate ester hydraulic fluids, the latter will have a detrimental effect such as coking propensity and resistance to corrosion.

For additional information and specifications please refer to the supplied documentation.

BP® CASTROL® Gear Oils &...

Although gearboxes and transmissions serve the same operational scope their lubricants differ. Generally, gear oils are used in manual gear boxes and transmission fluids in automatic transmissions. However, oils used in manual gearboxes are thicker, more viscous oils to withstand high temperatures and be able to function under extreme pressure. Those used in automatic transmissions are less viscous and thinner gearbox fluids which contain detergents and act as coolants while they contain further additives to improve their life expectancy.

BP® ENERGEAR range of automotive gear oils have been designed for use in a wide range of gear units with spur, bevel or helical gear design, including synchronized manual gearboxes, transmissions and axles under moderately severe load and pressure conditions. They were applicable for passenger cars, light and heavy trucks as well as agricultural and building machinery providing effective protection of gear transmissions and prolonging component life. The Energear EP range conformed to the requirements of API GL-4.

CHEMETALL® ARDROX® Alkaline...

CHEMETALL® ARDROX® 185 Series colorless scale/rust removers have a greater than 12.5 pH level and a relative density of 1.43. The series includes 185L, a highly alkaline concentrated solution in water containing sequestrants and 185 water soluble powder offering a strong alkaline solution containing sequestrants. They can be used to remove rust and scale from iron and steel  in immersion tanks but also oil, grease and some air-dried paints.  They will not attack or cause hydrogen embrittlement in ferrous alloys and there is markedly less tendency for re-rusting to occur than with acid pickling.

ARDROX® 185L is usually used at a concentration of 30-50% by volume in water, depending on the amount of rust or scale to be removed. This corresponds to a concentration of 200 - 375 g/L of ARDROX® 185 in water. ARDROX® 185 must always be dissolved in cold water. There will be an exothermic reaction and the solution will heat up to 50-60°C / 120-140°F. The ARDROX® 185L is applied by immersion between 82 and 93°C (180 and 200°F). Agitate with mechanical agitation, do not use air agitation.

The immersion time will vary according to the degree of contamination, light rust being removed in approximately 10 minutes while heavy rust may take about an hour. If the components are heavily contaminated with oil or grease, the life of the ARDROX® 185L  bath will be prolonged if they are first degreased (e.g. with an ARDROX 6-series product).

When used in conjunction with the adequate other ARDROX® specialties (sold separately), ARDROX® 185L can be used to remove scale from hot-end jet engine components. It can also be used for cleaning parts made of titanium.

Thorough water rinsing must take place after the use of ARDROX® 185L. If no further immediate surface treatment is to follow, the use of a dewatering and protective fluid such as an ARDROX® 3-series is desirable to give protection from re-rusting.

The ARDROX® 185L  comes in a 5-gallon and 180-liter containers while the 185 powder in 25 kg bags.
